This hotel does not cater for the british. The hotel serves cold food three times daily. when you complain the answer you will get is the food tastes better when served cold. I find this very strange as the restaurants all around serve hot food, no complaints there. If you want to go on any excursions you are out of luck, you will have to sort it out yourself. the excursions you can go on are with the german, belgium, french, or other european countries, which i dont mind but i would like to be able to understand what the excursion is all about. the entertainment is non existant. unless you call setting fire to the bar by the head barman every now and again in the evening a bit of fun, i find it a bit dangerous. if you have any teenage children you may as well have stayed at home. the only thing for them is swimming and playing draughts. the gym consists of rusty equipment that does not work. the indoor pool is empty not a drop of water to be seen. the same goes for the water feature outside. we paid for three adults and my son was allocated a fold up bed fit for a child. after two days we moved room. the shuttle bus will cost you one euro each way. if there are not enough people to go down to the town it does not go and you will have to walk.

The Arion Palace Hotel was beautiful from the outside, as it looks on the website. Our room was very clean, the cleaner came every day and changed bedding and towels. The pool was nice. Thats the only good bit.

We were on the lower floor which is kind of under ground in the hotel, it is weird to describe but it had a very odd feel to it, kind of like being in underground dungeons.

The food was awful, after 3 days (and this is somebody who loves food full stop and not fussy) we had to get a taxi to the very small town. Thankfully there was a beautiful, very modern restaurant there, but it cost 100 eruos for family of 3, so as we had paid all inclusive we decided to live off the potatoes and dreaded ham and cheese baguetts they put out daily. There was no atmosphere with the waiters or hotel staff, although the hotel manager did try his best to be amusing.

I got "told off" on 2 occasions, as did many other holiday makers for not taking my coffee cup back to the waiter and leaving it on the table. Hellooo, I'm on holiday and you're the waiter. They were very very miserable, which is the first time I have ever encountered miserable greeks.

Would I go back? Definiately not.

I agree with the rest reviewers that were not satisfied with their stay in Arion.
I also wonder how this hotel received the 4 star classification. It actually looks something like 2.5 stars. My experience:
The rooms are spacious but not very clean. Only two soaps left for me during the first day and that's all. Nothing for the rest days. All the furniture in the room is quite cheap and not very clean. The bed sheets were not changed during my 4 night stay.
The breakfast and the dinner include a good variety of choices and I believe that practically it is the only positive service of this hotel. Of course there were a lot of flies above the buffet making you some times not to taste specific foods.
The overall service of the hotel does not match to a 4 star hotel. The position of the hotel is on a hill where around it there is nothing apart for fields. The sea is not accessible on foot and practically you absolutely need a car for reaching the hotel. Also Ierapetra downtown is 5-10 minutes away by car.
The worst experience was that the last night I had a cold shower, since hot water was not available.

I absolutely agree with "katiloo", Sunny Manchester -Do Not Bother ! -his review from June 7, 2007.
Warning to everyone : give a wide berth to it ! I really do not know how it managed to get four stars. It makes a mockery of the true four star hotels and, most imortantly, of the paying guests. I just want to add that A/C stinks and the towels are smelly. My cell phone got lost there and we never found the "wondeful beaches nearby".
Never more Arion Palace Hotel in Ierapetra !!

When You look at the website of the hotel You get the idea it's a midrange hotel with not much to offer. When You arrive everything changes. You realise what extraordinary people you're dealing with. Panagiotis is a fine poolbarman with more than one trick up his sleeve and always helpful and smiling. The man can and does drink, without getting annoying, which is exceptional for barmen.

You can have Sauna, there is a superb swimming pool outside and a small one for the small children or lazy persons. Chairs for lying down at no extra cost. All inclusive means just what it says. Something special is that raki is included in the AI, since this is not really common, even in Crete.

The rooms are spacious and luxurious to say the least. The washin basin is true marble. there is a hairdryer, and in our room a superb enormous bath.

The food is of good quality. You get a mixture a little bit like this: 20% international food, 40% Greek Food 30% German food and 10% English food. This very balanced mixture keeps You entertained at least for two weeks.

There are a few small sports things You can do. Tennis, Boccia, PingPong, some small children swings and a glide Maybe the only downside is what they call a gymnasium is really not so much of a gymnasium since equipment is quite old.

The hotel is as clean as You can expect from a cretan hotel, which is much cleaner than your average four star hotel in crete but somewhat more of a three star hotel in let's say Spain or France. Still it deserves an extra star (it's fifth) since so much luxury in such a small hotel makes You feel privileged and You know, here You're a person, not a number like in some big resorts.

The hotel looks so much more like a palace in real life then it looks like on those photographs.

I wish I was there right now and could enjoy a mythos from the barrel with a supercooled raki on the side.

Two thumbs up ;)

After reading other reviews, we decided to embark on our trip at the beginning of the tourist season. We arrived at Heraklion on May 22nd, in the early evening, and, after about an hour bus ride, we were offloaded into a taxi which proceeded to drive another hour before arriving at our hotel. This was a bit unnerving, as we were the only 2 going on the 2nd part of the journey and we were travelling in the dark. We arrived at the hotel, and were pleasantly suprised. The hotel, the pool and the grounds were well maintained. The hotel itself was perched on a hill, and had magnificant views of Ierapetra, the ocean, and the mountains. The rooms were adequate (no better than a 3*). The staff were very accommodating. There were only 12 people at the hotel during our 2 week stay so it was very quiet. Some of the issues we had were the shuttle bus not being operative, and the air conditioning not being turned on. Both were supposedly due to the lack of customers at the resort. The food was palatable...I'd recommend passing on the all inclusive. The gym was a joke, a couple of bikes, a few mats and some 5 lb free weights. Other services listed in the brochure came at a cost. Because the shuttle bus was inoperative, we either had to walk for 1/2 hour to town, or took a cab that cost 6 Euros each way. It was also a 15 minute walk to the a black sand and pepple beach. I don't know where the wonderful beaches of Ierapetra were, we didn't find them.
If you want to take a coach tour of any kind, you have to walk to/from the main road (day or night). One evening we arrived at the main road after midnight and had to walk to the hotel.
Overall, it was a pleasant experience. Ierapetra is not as "touristy" as other locations, but that will probably change soon.

Do not stay at this hotel. It is most certainly the worst 4 star hotel on the planet.
We went on an all inclusive basis with Kosmar - never ever again. We checked out after eight hours (eight hours of phone calls to the rep, Rebecca the Kosmar overseas manager in the UK and Sarah the resort manager in Crete) and went to the Miramare Hotel in Ag Nik.

Kosmar were extremly unhelpful to say the least and not at all phased that the description in the Kosmar brochure of this hotel might as well have been describing a completly different accommodation.

We are well used to accommodation being basic in Greece but this place was beyond all belief. It reminded me of a cheap Blackpool B&B that had just opened it's doors for the first time since winter - certainly not the beautiful four star bursting with facilities that Kosmar so wonderfully describe.

Kosmar refused to move us and would not even help us to find alternative accommodation for which we said we would pay for ourselves. We ended up phoning other hotels on the island to find availability and eventually 'escaped' to the Miramare.

The Miramare was fab by the way, could not fault it one bit and can't believe it holds the same star rating as the Arion Palace.
It's just a shame it cost us an extra 1200 euros!

Thank you Kosmar for the crap holiday you provided, the appalling customer service we recieved and the priceless 'couldn't care less' attitude you exude.
