“Totally loved it!”

What a cool hotel! The layout of the spacious rooms (well, our room anyway), was built on somewhat of a slant and the color scheme was a soft neon green - very modern. It looked like the furniture was fairly new and the room was very clean. The hotel is not overlooking the ocean or water, but it is within walking distance - perhaps 5 minutes. The staff was very friendly and the breakfast was very good. If we ever went back, we would definitely stay here. You can't beat this hotel for the quality or price!

Our agent (Greek Sun) booked us into this hotel for one night, due mainly to its proximity to the ferry port (taxi - 5 euros). It was also an easy walk to the touristy part of the centre of town, where there were plenty of nice bars and restaurants.
The hotel was very clean and comfortable. Bedroom reasonably spacious with a good bed and sizeable bathroom. No view of note from the room though, 'cos hotel is on a side street.
The guy at reception was most informative about the vicinity and where we might have dinner. He recommended a local taverna at the seafront which was very good (and much cheaper than those uptown). The hotel breakfast was excellent - good range of fruit, cereals, juices, bread, pastries etc.
Overall, more than adequate for our one night stay, and we would be happy to make it a base for a longer stay in the future.

We decided to walk from the bus stop to Kastro hotel. It was about 15min walk from the main bus station (probably less if you have no luggage). We would probably advise you to take the taxi since it wasn't easy trying to walk down the streets with our luggage. Taxi would probably have cost only 6 or 7 euros.

The hotel lobby was nice, so we had high expectations of the room, which wasn't as nice as the lobby. It was still a decent room though, but the bathroom could have used some work, it was a bit worn out. We got a regular room with two twin beds. Overall, I felt that the room was clean.

On the second day that we were there, they upgraded us to the suite on the top floor because of some scheduling conflict and they didn't have enough rooms. Which was lucky for us, because the bathroom in the suite was much nicer! It had a separate shower and a jacuzzi tub. The suite has access to a private balcony (which may not be so private, because they just blocked off a section off the rooftop, and any guests can come up to the rooftop to enjoy the view). View was mostly of the city and you can also see the sea. When you enter the suite, there's a sitting area, maybe because of this sitting area, the actual room where the bed was seemed smaller than the regular room we had on our first night. But the room felt much more cozier (as opposed to the regular room, which didn't feel as inviting).

The location of the hotel was great. We walked everywhere. There was a supermarket nearby so it was convenient for getting water or snacks. The breakfast was very good! The people at the reception was also friendly. They helped us call a cab on our last day. The cab ride to the port was about 5 to 10min and cost less than 10euros.

We stayed twice for one night on arrival and departure from Crete. The Kastro is well located relative to downtown and the waterfront and is only 12 minutes by taxi from the airport and less from the port. The rooms are well appointed, comfortable and clean and at a standard above what one would normally expect from a three star hotel. The decor throughout the hotel is very tastefully done. The breakfast buffet is excellent and for those departing very early for flights or ferries coffee, fruit and juices are available even at 0530.
We found all three front desk staff that we encountered extrmely helpful and friendly and would disagree strongly with the few reviewers that were critical of them.
Street parking outside the hotel is difficult but there is a parking garage nearby. Best time to find street parking near the hotel is mid afternoon.
Some improvements to the reliability of the wifi would be appreciated.
In all, we strongly recommend this hotel.

We stayed 2 nights to visit Heraklion before heading into the countryside. Kastro Hotel was excellent as a base for visiting the town. Good location, good breakfast, free wifi, comfortable and spacious room. Not luxury but fantastic value at 60 eur/night for two, including breakfast.

my boyfriend and i stayed here for two nights. when we arrived (super early due to taking an overnight ferry from athens), there were no rooms available, so we went and grabbed breakfast a few streets down and wandered around the city. when we returned, we were given a room, but after we had gotten to our room and begun to settle in, we received a call asking us to vacate the room because the cleaning crew hadn't finished up. we thought that was really odd, but we left the room and hung out downstairs for about 35-40 minutes, waiting for them to finish. while downstairs we grabbed some coffee from the coffee pot. we didn't think this was a problem, but upon checkout, we discovered that we had been billed 11 euros for the two cups of coffee we had!!! we questioned this charge and were told that we were not allowed to have the coffee for free that morning because we had not stayed in the hotel the night before. we were also told that we had had a full breakfast. we insisted we had only had coffee and were only downstairs because our room wasn't ready yet. the best the hotel could offer, was to drop the charge down to 5 euros! 5 euros for two cups of coffee!!! that's ridiculous! if the hotel is so keen on nickel and dimming, perhaps the it should have given us a refund for 1) not having our room ready on time, 2) having a broken espresso machine (which was supposed to be included in the breakfast we paid for with our booking), and 3) having no cold water at breakfast (again because the dispenser was broken). we were also charged for a phone call we never made.

additionally, no one helped us bring our bags into or out of the hotel or our rooms. we had to lug them up the 5 to 7 steps from the street to the lobby and then to our rooms (thank god the elevator was working)!

moreover, we rented a car through the hotel, and the car's clutch was going. this made it extremely difficult to shift gears. as a result, i had trouble getting the car to go into reverse when i tried to park it on the street after a long day of traveling to phaestos. in order to avoid a car accident, my boyfriend asked the hotel to have someone come pick up the car (we didn't need it anymore anyways), and when the daytime receptionist called the appropriate person, she told that person about our difficulties and rolled her eyes! even if she thought that it was silly that i couldn't get the car to reverse, she should never have displayed it on her face in front of my boyfriend! her behavior was extremely rude and unprofessional. moreover, she was rude, unfriendly and unhelpful to us throughout our entire stay. as an aside, the nighttime receptionist was much friendlier and significantly more professional!

while we were at the hotel, the workers at knossos went on strike, so we could not visit it, and considering we primarily came to crete to visit knossos, we were extremely frustrated. luckily phaestos was open (until 3pm only), but we had to rent a car to get there.

i would not recommend this hotel. there should be similar priced hotels with better customer service available in the area.
