“Gounes, near Gouves”
Reviewed August 17, 2007

Gounes is a small village, next to Gouves. The appts at the Golden Bay were clean and spacious. Gounes is very quiet, quieter than Gouves. Go to the taverna Ambrosia for excellent sea food, Greek salad. A taxi from the Golden bay will cost you 10Euro, ask the driver to drop you on the main st in Gouves. This will be near a bar called Baraki, which is a great place. If you go tell the Irish girl working there, you were recommeded. Its a great place to chill out. Walk down to the beach, past all the shops, to the Tavernas on the beach which are v v romantic, with meals for 12Euros inc a glass of wine. good value, and great choice. If you are a smoker, buy your cigs in Crete, they are around 27 Euros for 200. Heraklion airport duty free is crowded hot, and doesn't have the choice of brands. A packet of cigs is around 2.80 Euros, tobbacco even cheaper. Try the ouzo, if you like pernod you will be fine. We went s/c, and ate beautiful fruit and Greek yoghurt in the daytime, and for breakfast, with honey. plenty of supermarkets around. The big supermarket opposite Baraki sells adult toys along with all the usual stuff you'd expect to find!

Self Catering in Gournes- although we didn't cook much!
My husband and I wanted a relaxing restful break.
We could not fault the accommodation. The staff were friendly, the
room was clean and roomy and the food excellent. The resort was quiet,
which is what we were looking for, but it was only the first week of the
season and I would imagine that it does get busier and noisier. If you
want a club scene then this is not the place for you, but for those who
prefer a quieter break then it is excellent. The bus fares were really
reasonable, although it is quite a walk to the bus stop. We took a
trip to Aghios Nikolaos by bus and it was only 9.40 euros return each.
The next village, which has lots of shops and restaurants is Gouves and
that was 1 euro 20 cents each way, so not bad at all.
Don't confuse this with the hotel of the same name in Malia.

The only drawback to the entire holiday was the flights from Newcastle
which were with Thomas Cook who were the worst airline we have ever
travelled with. I recommend you buy your own water in the airport to
take. Also take your own blanket cos only a select few get them and don't
bother to pay for in flight meals as they are rubbish.

  • Liked — Quiet location with beautiful views.
  • Disliked — Distance from bus route and decent supermarket
