Gounes is a small village, next to Gouves. The appts at the Golden Bay were clean and spacious. Gounes is very quiet, quieter than Gouves. Go to the taverna Ambrosia for excellent sea food, Greek salad. A taxi from the Golden bay will cost you 10Euro, ask the driver to drop you on the main st in Gouves. This will be near a bar called Baraki, which is a great place. If you go tell the Irish girl working there, you were recommeded. Its a great place to chill out. Walk down to the beach, past all the shops, to the Tavernas on the beach which are v v romantic, with meals for 12Euros inc a glass of wine. good value, and great choice. If you are a smoker, buy your cigs in Crete, they are around 27 Euros for 200. Heraklion airport duty free is crowded hot, and doesn't have the choice of brands. A packet of cigs is around 2.80 Euros, tobbacco even cheaper. Try the ouzo, if you like pernod you will be fine. We went s/c, and ate beautiful fruit and Greek yoghurt in the daytime, and for breakfast, with honey. plenty of supermarkets around. The big supermarket opposite Baraki sells adult toys along with all the usual stuff you'd expect to find!
