“outdated and noisy”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014

Very basic hotel, suffering from underinvestment with rock hard beds, and incredibly noisey from the road noise (not the expected easter celebrations). Our family room seemed to be just a normal room with 2 extra beds wedged into it.

The hotel is well located, and with a great view from the top floor, but we were happy that we only had to endure it for 1 night

59 eur for a double room with breakfast (nothing special-just the beatiful view) is a good price.location OK, you reach by walk the old city, but still alone I woul call a taxi to go there.Rooms are big, renovated (still a had a feeling it was in 2000) but so noisy, that it is not possibile to sleep!!!!!!!! The bathroom smells brrrrrr...I think there r better hotels in herakliom.reception ok not so warm greeted. Taxi airport hotel costs 15 eur .

I was with a group and they were expecting us however upon entry to the hotel we were not warmly greeted. The receptionist was extremely rude to all of us. As the tour leader I kept trying to take over and expedite the check in process but she did wanted to delay things and was in nom way helpful, There was a booking issue with one of the rooms and I was trying to sort it out with management. As were all tired and it was past dinner my group wanted to get to there rooms to freshen up and get dinner. The receptionist said no one could have keys until the booking issue was sorted out. This was unprofessional and uneeded to keep the whole there while an internal issue be fixed. A manager came to the desk and asked her twice to give us our keys and she just keep delaying. Finally we got keys and then as only 2 people fit in 1 elevator at a time they again had to wait even longer to get to the rooms. The rooms look nothing like any of the hotel photo and we all occupied 8 rooms. Are were deplorable. The were out dated, smelled and the bathrooms AWEFUL Molded and stained shower curtains, terrible mold smell, mold on the vents and walls. Thin towels, Little space to move around and store luggage. Horrible A/C. The beds were hard and clearly old mattresses. I think maybe some rooms have been redone which is what you see on website photos and all rooms need to be redone. receptionists needs to be fired.

CastelloManagement, Manager at Castello City Hotel, responded to this review, October 17, 2013
Dear Madam,

We thank you for your stay in Castello City Hotel. It was an honour for us to accommodate you and your group.

First, and most importantly, we wish to apologize for any inconvenience caused. The hotel management has read your review carefully and started a full investigation to find out what went wrong.

In reply to your complaints, I would like to make a few points of explanation to set things in context. I was the person in charge during your check in, and, if you remember, I came to meet you at the front desk area since I wanted to welcome you in person.

a) The reason for the delay was that an additional single room had to be allocated to your group, which had not been reserved in advance. Although the hotel was fully booked, we managed to find an extra room for your group, and I came to inform you in person that we had solved the problem. I also informed all the members of your group that they could proceed to their rooms, but they preferred to wait.

b) Regarding the receptionist's behaviour, we apologize if it seemed rude to you. The reason was that she was under pressure and felt stressed. The management has taken up the matter with her.

c) Regarding your accommodation, we allocated you to the economy area, since you indicated that you preferred to be accommodated all together, but again we apologize for any inconvenience. The hotel is upgrading its accommodation, and we have already begin renovation work on the floor in question.

We are proud of our reputation for service and of our increasingly high TripAdvisor ranking among Heraklion city hotels, and we are extremely sorry to have disappointed you. We will work hard to rectify the problems and to make our services even better. If you visit Heraklion again, we would be pleased to offer you free accommodation so that we can show you how we have improved.

We thank you again for your feedback and suggestions, and we assure you that the hotel management is already taking appropriate action.

For anything else you may need I am personally at your full disposal.

Yours sincerely,

Dimitrios Kotzantapanis

Good value hotel. 15 min walk from the port and less to the key museums. My rooms was clean, comfortable and quiet but was very dated. They are renovating though so I know some of the rooms have already been updated.

Friendly staff on reception. The key plus is the restaurant - located on the rook (5th floor) with great views. Breakfast buffet had a good selection but I found the hot food not the best quality. I had dinner there 1 evening and found the meal to be very nice. Note, the bathroom was tiny. Clean but tiny! Think of London boutique hotel size...!

For the price I paid for 3 nights it was certainly well worth the money.

This place is a basic city hotel, not too far from the port by taxi. However, you can walk to the centre of town easily. The single room was tiny and a bit depressing. When I complained about it and the fact the air conditioner didn't work I was moved to a better room without extra charge. The best thing about this hotel is the breakfast on the top floor with a lovely view. And the breakfast is very good. Anything you could want.

Rooms basic, but sleep well. Good value.
Fantastic restaurant, but wait could be long. the restaurant os on the top floor with a fantastic terrace were to relax whilst waiting for your food.
Nice breakfast.

We stayed there for one night and used this hotel as a starting point to visit Heraklion town and Knossos Palace before exploring the rest of the island. Breakfast is equal to a 4 star hotel, great variety! Astonishing views from the top floor. Very polite and helpful staff. Central location. Thoroughly enjoyed the offer (included in the room rate) of a hop on/hop off open top tour bus for sightseeing the monuments in the city and Knossos Palace. Bathroom needed renovation. Recommended for a good starting point before exploring Crete island or as an overnight stay before catching the airplane to return home.
