Hotel Irini
Ranked #23 of 58 Hotels in Heraklion
Reviewed August 9, 2012 via mobile

I stayed here visiting a family member for 4 days. The best thing about this hotel is its a 5 minute walk to Lion Square and everything to do in Heraklion. If you're a city person this hotel is a good bet. Call ahead if you're renting a car because I found out after paying a large fee to garage it across the street, it's actually free. Find out from the front desk how to valet. The rooms are forgettable, but the city itself is so awesome, you should not be spending any time in your room except to sleep. My TV, shower and toilet worked fine when I was there and the front desk staff were very nice. I heard them speak at least 3 languages to guests. You will need to rent a car or arrange a Taxi to Knossos, but with no traffic- its maybe a 15 minute ride to get there. I also day tripped it to Xania and had a blast. The drivers are insane in this town, but since I'm from NY, I felt at home :-)

I arrived at 5.30am, and they had a room ready for me. Nice! And it had filtered views of the Venetian harbour, fort and seafront. An unexpected plus. It is only a couple of blocks from the tourist streets to Lion Square and down to the port and bus station. It was so easy to get around the old town and walk to the museums, tavernas etc. Good wifi in the room was nice as well. Breakfast was basic, but okay for this level of hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get on the sea side

Yes it's an old hotel, it could do with a lot of renovation. Beds were not the best, would have appreciated another pillow. This would be an excellent deal if the breakfast was included...

However, I booked this as we wanted to be within walking distance to the high speed catamaran to thira, it took us 6 min to walk to the boat. Parking was included, not street parking but their own parking lot, hotel was clean and had wifi, a/c, etc. for 45€ you can't complain. Its good for staying near the port, having free parking, and to sleep and be out for the day. I would stay here again. Staff is friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Faces parking lot but huge balconies. Lower floors had fast wifi.

Dirty place. Balcony doors do not lock. Shower head has no support. Toilet did not flush. Staff let us take a taxi to the airport when all Greeks must have known there was a 24 hour general strike. Was early morning and we were the only idiots out there. Noise through the thin walls sounded like the other guests were in your room with you. Breakfast was a joke. Staff were disinterested to the point of total dismissive ness. Ruined my whole stay in Crete to the point of positive hatred of the place.

Rooms: Just ok. Clean. No tea and coffee making facilities.

Staff: helpful and warm as Greek are in general!

Location: Great! Near the main street and close to the harbor. As well as good to get to Knossos.

Breakfast: good. Excellent coffee and a large variety of teas.

It suited our needs. Decent budget hotel. Better online price than walk- in price.

All in all, not a bad hotel for the price. Quite good to use as a stop off point or for a couple of nights stopover.

Needs some kind of updating.

A plus: I had the best coffee of my life in the bar at the hotel! DO try it!

Should have read the reviews on trip advisor - went to booking.com instead and was very disappointed! The internet was advertised as free and was not... The rooms need a major renovation. Beds are super uncomfortable, staff was not friendly, air conditioning didn't work at first, just felt old and neglected like everyone else has said. There are plenty of other great hotels down the street with the same great location for much better quality. Don't stay here!

Close to the port, that's the reason we stayed for 1 night, but the Hotel needs renovation! Beds not good, bathroom very poor!
Breakfast was ok.

Room Tip: Try to find other place in the area.
