“Nice view but smoky”
Reviewed July 12, 2008

We stayed one night in Heraklion before taking the ferry to Santorini. When we booked the room, we asked specifically for a non-smoking room. At check-in, the reception confirmed a non-smoking room. However, there were ash-trays in the room and the room smelled smoky. The hotel lobby and breakfast room were very smoky.

On the positive side, the view of the harbor from the room was very nice. The hotel is also within easy walking distance to the harbor.

The Megaron was a very nice hotel. The room was large, clean and comfortable. More channels on the TV than I get at home! The staff was very helpful and courteous. The restaurant was very good, but should have been for the prices. The location is excellent if you want to be in downtown Heraklion or next to its harbor. The bus station is right at its door if you want to get out of town.

The only down-sides were 1) not much of a view out the window (we faced away from the harbor), 2) the every-present aroma of smoke from other rooms and 3) the heating/cooling system wouldn't cool the room down (had they turned off the air conditioning for the season?); fortunately the windows opened.

The Megaron was awesome! Great location with the harbor and the bus stop right out front. The room was gorgeous...very modern and clean,
Breakfast was wonderful and the hotel restaurant was fabulous and offered a wonderful view. Every evening the maid folded my pajamas into a swan, just like on a cruise ship, and they left cookies on our pillows, with the turn-down service! The pool was so-so, but we weren't there for the pool! Would definitely recommend the Megaron and would stay there again!

LOVED this hotel!! Great location if you arrive by boat. Only a 10 -15 minute walk to the center of town. This hotel was really nice – pretty swanky. We got upgraded to a Suite - it was amazing. Everything was brand new and very up to date. The breakfast buffet was good and offered a variety of hot options, meats, cheese and lots of sweets!! Turn down service was nice. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Parking is a little difficult. They have a lot out front, which is free but is also a bus stop. It was somewhat difficult to find a spot and then once we found a spot, it was hard to get out of the parking lot due to all of the buses – but once inside we quickly forgot about the parking.

Well located hotel, close to airport (8 euro taxi) and a short walk to the port for ferries and catermans, close to museums and good food choices. Building was immaculate and most impressive near the waterfront. Room was very stylish.large with very comfortable bed. Excellent bathroom with Bulvari toiletries.
Breakfast was average with great dessert and bread selection but limited hot foods.

Unfortunately staff left a little to be desired. On arrival the staff were pleasant and advised that we were to be given an upgraded room (we had ordered a sea view room) but then proceeded to argue amongst themselves about whether to upgrade. The room was fine but it left a poor impression having them argue infront of us regarding the room. We had difficulty paying the bill twice we were advised to come later - first late in the evening prior to departing (as reception was on private phone call and quite obviously could not be bothered with clients whilst planning her personal life), and secondly just before breakfast (think the staff member was hoping that one of her collegues would do the paperwork if we came later).

In summary a good hotel, excellent clean rooms and well located.

Stayed in this hotel a week at early September during a business trip in Crete. Great location in the city centre. Good quality of the rooms. Good tips for restaurants on the website.
