Located at the highest point in Herkalion, the views are amazing. If you are not a fan of his books, do a little reading before you visit, so that you can appreciate what you are seeing. Outside of town, there is a wonderful museum dedicated to him and the historical museum has a section dedicated to him.

The city's fortifications are a must. They are massive and impressive, they are being maintained (to some extent) and developed as a tourist attraction, and a visit to Heraklion wouldn't be complete without checking out this attraction.

Heraklion is a small city and we were able to walk the perimeter in a day! It's a short climb to the site of Nikos Kazantzakis tomb but you can view the full city from the summit.
The municipality has put effort (although not so much into maintenance) of the gardens lining the Venetian Walls.

If you love the work of Kazanzakis it is worth making this pilgrimage. The view from the site is beautiful. Sadly the area was not well maintained the times I've been there so I usually take a couple of plastic bags to pick up the rubbish!
