“FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT HOTEL IN CITY CENTRE”
Reviewed November 2, 2013

We have had a run of good hotels recently and were impressed by the reviews for the Lato Boutique that we found on Tripadvisor. Our experience matched the best of those reviews.

The staff of the hotel were friendly, helpful and efficient. The restaurant is excellent, serving traditional Cretan cuisine with more refinement than most other local restaurants (though the rooftop terrace is rather too windy on some autumn evenings). Breakfast is good, recognising that a substantial early morning meal is not part of the Greek culinary tradition. Our room (a junior suite) was large, clean and comfortable. Bathroom was rather small and not well designed, and the plumbing is prone to relay unwholesome smells if one is not careful with basin waste plugs.

The hotel is only five minutes from the city centre, the harbour and the bus station: an excellent base for a day in or our out of Heraklion.

Room Tip: Junior suites allow for lazy afternoon naps. The harbour view is spectacular.

We felt very welcome from the moment of booking online. We liked everything about the hotel and surprised ourselves by eating in the restaurant every evening rather than trying new places. The breakfast arrangements were efficient with no problems of waiting for tables. The hotel is well placed for a short walk to the harbour, along the sea front, to both the archaelogical museum and historical museum, to the port for a trip to Santorini and the bus station for a trip to Knossos. Thank you Hotel Lato for an excellent holiday.

Room Tip: A view of the harbour makes all the difference.

“This was my first visit to Crete and the Lato was a great place to stay. The staff makes a difference as they go out of their way to help. Nothing better than sitting on the balcony in the evening as the sun sets and the colors change on the Venetian Fort.”

Room Tip: The rooms facing the sea are great to sit on the balconey and watch the boats and how the sun change...

We stayed for 1 night at this property. Upon check-in, we were informed that they can take a reservation for dinner at the rooftop restaurant. When we called the front desk in 30 minutes, we were informed that they do not have any tables for the evening which was strange. We had to make last minute plans for dinner which did not turn out to be a memorable experience. The room itself was on the small side with a decent view of the venetian fortress. They also had some goodies in the room but we were unsure if those were complimentary. The breakfast in the morning was quite good and the check out experience was way better. They also assisted us with making a one way car rental booking and even offered us a better price than the airport. They also have a sister property next door which appears to be newer. The location was quite good with easy access to all attractions. I would only recommend this for a short stay.

Dear travelmusings,
Thank you very much for your feedback and your kind remarks concerning our personnel’s efficiency and your overall accommodation experience.
I am terribly sorry though for missing the opportunity to offer you a memorable dinning experience, as the vast majority of our guests declares of having. It is true that our restaurant is quite popular to both visitors and locals and we strive to successfully cater every single request. However, there might be few unfortunate times that even hotel guests without prior confirmed bookings can not be instantly allocated. We do suggest alternatives though, offering a cocktail while expecting the first “check-call”. Please accept my sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused and please rest assured that coordination procedures have been already optimized.
We thank you very much for choosing our property for your accommodation while in Heraklion. My team and I would be grateful to have the chance to offer you our services again in the near future.

Most visitors to Crete head straight for their beach resorts from the airport. Since we were taking a cruise out of Heraklion, we decided to stay in town. We stayed at Lato before and after our Mediterranean cruise. It is located in the old city harbor area and a short 5 minute walk to the heart of the Heraklion old town center. Some of the rooms and the roof top restaurant have great views of the harbor and Venetian castle at the harbor entrance. Our pre-cruise room was American size large with a big outdoor patio. The rooms were clean with flat screen TV’s and free WiFi. Our post-cruise room was smaller, but had a water and harbor view. The lobby is small but well decorated with modern boutique furniture. There are actually two hotel buildings. We stayed in the main building both times. The roof top Herb Garden restaurant was excellent. It is small and popular, so make a reservation. There is also another restaurant and bar on the first floor where a breakfast buffet is served. There are some excellent seafood cafes along the waterfront and lots of al fresco cafes near the old town center a few minute walk away. There are also a lot of shops and banks close by. Most of the Heraklion museums and tourist attractions are less than 10 minute walk from the hotel. The cruise and ferry port terminal is a few minute taxi ride or a 15 minute walk.

Room Tip: Ocean view upper floor

We booked this hotel for a one night stay because we were arriving late in the evening by ferry boat from Santorini. We also requested the hotel to have a taxi available to us upon arrival to take us to the hotel. The hotel charges 15 Euro for this service but is not really necessary as the hotel is located close to the ferry docks and there are many taxis available. The hotel is a very nice modern hotel centrally located in Heraklion and has a very nice sea view. There is a very nice roof top resturaunt with good food selections. The breakfast buffet is outstanding both in selection and food quality. The rooms are very nice, roomy and clean. This hotel would be ideal for families as well as business guests

I would stay at this hotel again
