Owner description: These labyrinthine ruins are said to have been home to the monstrous Minotaur, a half-man half-bull creature that devoured young virgins.

Knossos is probably one of the most impressive archaeological sites that anyone can visit in today's Greece. It was once the centre of one of the most powerful civilizations of the ancient world and through excavations, mythology and history it tells us the story of its people, the Masters of the Sea: the Minoans.

If in Crete, it is a must see. This is so historical, date back 6,000 years. Impressive. the fee is minimal and worth it. You can take a guided tour, or do on your on, there are signage everywhere to explain what you are looking at. It was so amazing to see this site, so glad I want.

While this is a very interesting and beautiful site, I feel the effect is spoiled by the reconstructive work done by Arthur Evans. I'm afraid I'd rather travel to Paistos, even though it's a lot further. Tourist shops abound and are very expensive, especially for items you can buy elsewhere on the island.

OK so we all have to go there if we visit Crete - but it is worth the entry fee. Avoid the touting guides, the guidebook says it all and with less fanciful elaboration. The guy in the cafe taught me a few of the more interesting Greek words!

9,000 years of history!!! Tip.....we did not engage a private tour, which were usually includes a large bus load. We took a local bus from center of Herkalion to site, about 20 minutes, very in-expensive and reasonably easy to locate (we did have to ask a couple of locals in a street kiosk to be sure). Buy your roundtrip ticket from the bus street vending machine before you leave. The museum sanctions several very informative private guides at the entrance that will guide a small group of 10-12 in your language....cost about $10...wait about 15 minutes for a group to assemble. 1 1/2 tour was worth it and explore on your own after words. Decent museum shop and lots of tourist shops outside. Local return bus was easy to find.

The palace and grounds are restored to the point that you really get a good idea of life there.

Go early for smaller crowds.
