Owner description: A museum delineating the history of the island Crete, complete with artifacts belonging to the ancient civilizations that once populated the island.

Sure this place was first class with regards to archaeological artefacts, but didn't find it first class as far as museum experiences go. Room guards were overly critical, rather than engaging or helpful, quick to reprimand children for being too enthusiastic and talking in anything other than hushed tones about the exhibits. Whatever you do, don't think of going too close to the glass cases! The children's activity/guide booklets mentioned on their website were also 'out of print' on the day we visited. I understand that these artefacts are treasures, and that's a serious matter they might consider beyond children, but the children of today are the ones who will have care of these artefacts tomorrow. That enthusiasm and knowledge needs fostering now!!

A beautifully presented, extremely rich in history and amount of items displayed museum. I totally recommend a visit - especially with a guide - in combination with a visit to the archaeological site of Knossos which is also in Heraklion. Been there twice myself and i will return for a third time. Be prepared to spend at least an hour and a half to two hours in there. It s worth it!

Having visited the old archaeological museum, it was a wonderful surprise to visit the new facility. It was rebuilt on the original site which enables it to retain it's prime location within the city of Heraklion. The vast collection of Minoan artifacts in the museum are nicely grouped and, through the use of contemporary lighting and display methods, are extremely beautiful and easy to enjoy. If one is visiting Heraklion, this museum is not to be missed. I highly recommend spending some time there. Depending on one's natural inclinations, I suggest at least 2 hours, and for the person who reads every label or tag, 3 or 4 hours would not be excessive. Plus, during the warm season, it is a wonderful way to stay cool and absorb some ancient history...just beautiful.

Amazing artifacts well laid out and labelled. The map given with your ticket shows the highlights of the museum and which areas they are in. We didn't wait for a guided tour but felt that we saw and understood most of the exhibits.

Short walk from the Bus Station.

Small cafe on site which was ideal for a break in the middle of the visit.

If over 65 make sure that you take a driving license or passport as they will only give the Senior concession with proof of birth date.

The exhibits on the ancient Crete Minoan culture on view in this museum are simply superb and a must see while on Crete. The wood model of the palace of Knossos is an excellent way to gain an overview of the ruined ancient palace before you visit that site. It also displays the high architectural standard of the ancient times with buildings that were already four stories tall. The Minoan exhibits displayed here are second to none. All exhibits are explained in Greek and English. The facility itself is well designed and a pleasure to visit. There is also a large Roman section that unfortunately was closed at the time of my visit. Of course no one at the ticket office will tell you that before you buy the ticket! When I asked about the reason for the closure I was told that there was not sufficient staff available during the off-season but given that unemployment in Greece is still above 20%, the more likely reason are simply a lack of funds. So before you buy the ticket check first what is actually on display that day. Also be aware that student and senior discounts are limited to EC residents.
