Owner description: A museum delineating the history of the island Crete, complete with artifacts belonging to the ancient civilizations that once populated the island.

When we visited in early October the main museaum was still not completed so there is just the temporary exhibition in the basement. Pretty small but with most of the key Minoan artifacts from Knossos and the other palaces. In some ways the limited size is a blessing as it reduces museum fatigue!

Very much worth while as a complement to a visit to Knossos (you can get a combined ticket at either the palace or the museum).

It is still under reconstruction, whatever is open is really very interesting for those who are into Minoan culture. The artifacts are of amazing refinement

Fantastic artefacts, some from 4000BC! Current temporary display is very good and not too big! Very useful to see the display in combination to visits to Knossos and Phaestos.

The reopening of the new museum is running late, so there are only two temporary exhibit rooms open at present (October 2012). Access between the two involves walking round the outside of the building.
On the ground floor is a free exhibition of Greek and Roman statuary, with a little from the Minoan period.
In the basement, is a 4 Euros exhibition of Minoan artefacts. Unless you are an archaeology buff, this is probably enough to satisfy your curiosity anyway.

I didn’t expect it so small!! Then I discovered that the main museum was under construction when we visited, and only a temporary exhibition with a small part of the collection was displayed in 1 room available to the public. You’ll see vases, frescos, statues and other objects.

I was a bit disappointed by the size of the collection open to public, but as we went on the “tourism day”, we didn’t pay the entrance fee, and also it was a good way of staying cool for a bit and away from the heat.

If you go to the temporary exhibition you won’t need much time to visit it. 30 minutes will probably be enough.
Bear in mind there are toilets, but no cafes – as it is really small.
The location is really central.
