A place overlooked by many tourist and tour operators is the Ethnological Museum of Vori in the Mesara, just 2 Km. from Faistos Archeaological Site. The awarded museum has a fine collection of hundreds of atributes, tools, herbs, cooking stuff etc. on show in modern vitrines with discriptions. If you are on the search of Cretan social life and work, this museum is a must in your visit to Crete. Time for lunch her ? Go to the Taverna of The Belgians, they have the best Cretan Kitchen I ever tasted on the south coast.

This small outstanding museum is off the beaten track and likely to be missed by busloads of tourists. It is worthy of a visit. Well-marked and labeled in English and in Greek, the collected items give a comprehensive picture of traditional life in Crete, focusing on all aspects of life there: food harvesting and preparation, local herbs, agricultural tools, weaving, baskets, building tools, musical instruments and lovely old black and white photos. It is located in the town of Vori - near Phaestos and Matala - on the South shore of Heraklion Prefecture in Crete. The staff is courteous and well-informed and the entrance fee in April 2011 was 3 Euros. A bargain!

It may be situated in a small village next to Festos:Vori, howewer its exhibition can be described as high standard. this is the reason i suppose why it has earned a European Award. It demonstrates different human activities in sections ex. food, architecture, handicrafts, customs and tranditions etc which helps the visitor understand the use and meaning of the exhibits. apart from the actual exhibits there are also intresting old photographs in each section so you can have a real picture of the use of the exhibits. I very much liked the section where different workshops where shown such as that of the shoemaker. I believe it is worth visiting this museum, because you get an overall picture of Cretan society within time through its well presented exhibition
