If you're in the area, it's worth the trip to see the Palace of Knossos. We rented a car, so it was an easy drive. Parking was free and entrance was pretty inexpensive (6 euros if I remember correctly). There are some souvenir shops and restaurants around the site, so you can make an afternoon of it. There are plenty of markers that give you information about the site, but guides are also available for 10 euros.

A very popular tour. Glad I did it but would not rush to do again. If you like history then it is interesting. You do have to use your imagination to visualise how it must have been, as it is just 'bits of stone' dotted about with the odd staircase here & there (spectacular pillars & staircases though) An amazing place when you think about it. Such clever people the Minoans. Worth going on a guided trip as you get all the history. Prior knowledge of this I think would enhance the trip though.
It gets very very hot there so a hat & plenty of water is needed. Personally I don't think children would enjoy this trip unless they were history geeks.
Our trip enabled us to spend a couple of hours in Heraklion. The harbour was nice but overall not too impressed with there.

A really bizarre site. I'm all for a little judicious restoration, but this site has whole sections built from scratch using guesswork. Think concrete pillars, concrete steps, concrete roofs, painted murials and pillars etc. Worth a visit if your the sort of person who wants to see Hadrians Wall rebuilt with breeze blocks.

We've done this before about 13 years ago and this time it's a different experience because we have our 7 year old daughter (which I think she didn't care for much) I liked it this time around, we drove here this time instead of paying for a tour guide which lasted a few hours since they have to translate in 4 different languages and you're with over 30 people. We paid the entrance fee and be warn that there are several people that will stop you to pay for private tour with a ridiculous price of 20-40 euro each person in your group. Very pushy people. We tried to ditch them and as soon as you go inside the archeological site another tour guide tried to solicit you, but this one was worth it, he charged us 20 euro for us (family of 3) just to get the history and the important sites. It took about an hour versus the 3-4 hours last time. The good thing was, we made him as our photographer too.

Unfortunately this is a very popular tourist attraction and is very crowded with visitors on tour buses.Allow plenty of time to walk around and take a water bottle -it was very hot when we were there. The relics are well documented with history of the site.
