It will cost you for the boat trip over there (I can't remember how much) and an additional two Euros a piece (Adults) for entry - take cash! the nearest cash m/c is alongawayaway. A good strong pair of shoes is advisable: There is a lot to see on a very compact site, which is incredibly hard to get around and piece together in it's own time frame. There are several forts, each built on the remains of another; there is a settlement (or two, or few?); in addition to the famous Leper colony. This place has some incredible history behind and in it!!! The Leper colony was the latest settlement on the island. The lepers were treated really well, they had access to medicine and the means to earn a living, get married have children (the children were removed and adopted for obvious reasons). They pretty much built their own society with help from the mainland. It is wonderful and sad at the same time. A WORD of WARNING: Greek health and safety is NOT UK health and safety! You are expected to be able to think and act wisely! There are some very high, potentially lethal drops off cliffs and from buildings including Canon emplacements; so watch your fearless teenagers and have a mind for yourself as well.

Having read 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop, I have been wanting to visit for some time. I was not disappointed! The atmosphere has not been spoiled by 'over restoration' of this special place and we were lucky enough to be the first there and able to wander up the main street in peace. It only takes half an hour or so to walk round the whole island and the views back to the village of Plaka & beyond to Elounda are lovely. We were glad of a hat & water (even in October!!) as there's not much shade & the cafe was closed. The boat trip from Elounda takes you right round the island before returning and was worth the 10 Euros.

A nice afternoon out.A lot of ruins, currently being rebuilt.A short ride by boat, but queuing to get on the return boat was disorderly.

We got a bus from Gouves to Aghios Nickolaos ( 5.50 euros single), then 1.70 euros to Elounda (single). It then cost 10 euro return to the island and back. The fee in is 2 euros. So all in all not cheap.
However, the public buses are air conditioned and comfortable, staff speak the Queen's English and you go at your own pace. It can work out cheaper than a tour which could "tie you up" for much of the day.
A walk around Spinalonga can be leisurely or brisk - take a camera - and drinks (it was 32 Celcius on the Wednesday we were there). If you are visiting with children, make sure that they do not need the toilet before you walk around as there are no facilities on the way. I found Spinalong very interesting and humbling e.g. the leper cemetary. The same boat returned an hour later (you can return on many boats to Elounda with the same "ticket"). It's also worth a walk around Elounda and at Ag Nick (there is a market on a Wednesday morning during the season).

No dislikes, very good day and don't forget your camera. We had to wait for the weather to calm before visiting Spinalonga, I felt sad at the thought of those poor people (lepers) arriving from Plaka only to be greeted by the words "Abandon all hope".
