Having enjoyed Victoria Hislops book a few years ago I felt I had an insight into the island so was very pleased to have the opportunity to visit Spinalonga for myself.
we caught a boat from Elounda and it was only about a 20 minute sail to Spinalonga fare was 10 euro each.
The boat drops you off at the Islland and then after paying a ridiculously low fee of 2 euro, you re free to explore!.We just stroolled around on our own independant of any tour guides and this was extremely enjoyable.
You get the double history of the place as it was also an ancient fortress and parts of this are still visible.
I thought more of the old leper colony would still be there but understand the greeks demolished parts of it after it became uninhabited.
you certainly get a feel for the sadness the lepers must have felt as they made their last journey to the island and it is certainly poignant.
as most other reviewers state, you must make sure you take water.
the flexibility of being able to catch any boat back to Elounda gives you the flexibility to explore this island at your own pace.
it is much cheaper to buy your own boat trips and entry tickets than book through your tour operatorMore
