Had heard from other guests that booking an inclusive trip through a travel shop involved anything from 2-3 hours each way on the coach dependant on how many hotels the coach was picking up from so decided to go it alone with public transport. So glad we did as the bus journey from Kato Gouves to Aghios Nikolaos took just one hour and cost 5.7 euros each way. The buses were on time, comfortable and air conditioned - you buy your tickets on-board and the bus staff spoke very good English. It's about a 15 min walk from Aghios Nikolaous bus station to the harbour, but directions are clearly sign posted and the Nostoscruises boat leaves at 10.00 or 12.30 and as I recall the adult prices were about 16 euro return for a 4 hour cruise including a 30 min swimming stop and a guided tour of Spinalonga or 25 euro if you wanted the BBQ as well. The travel shop tours only catch the 10am boat, include a BBQ and your coach returns to resort soon after the end of the boat trip.
The advantage of going it alone is that you can please yourself. We arrived in Ag. Nik at 9am spending the whole morning there before having lunch and catching the 12.30 boat. Returning to resort by bus means you can spend the whole evening in Ag.Nik if you want. Would recommend going it alone.

took a boat from Elounda on a beautiful but windy day and enjoyed the 30min boat ride into this island. Upon arrival you buy your entrance tickets and only then you experience the hash conditions on this island. It must have been tough for the leppers who were brought here to die some century or so ago.
If going there be sure to prepare for some rock climbing, some of the areas have bad pavements
All in all an interesting and impressive trip

So much beauty of Crete to see in one day!

The boat trip to the island was beautiful, enjoying the sunshine, the breeze and the turquoise waters! The visit to Spinalonga was really interesting and the split of time between guided and own time felt right. I would definitely advise taking comfortable sturdy shoes and a good hat (not a lot of shade).

The boat then took us to a small beautiful beach where we could enjoy some time in the sea before having a barbecue on the boat. The beach is difficult to access with any mobility issues and there is no shaded or seating areas, and we didn’t realise this part of the trip was happening so had no towels or swimwear so made do with a short paddle! The barbecue on the boat was a bit chaotic with some really rude guests pushing each other and people basically clambering over each other to go back and forth- and balancing a tray on your knees on a rocking boat was a challenge!

The next part of the trip took us to St Nikolaos which was a beautiful port town and really enjoyed spending time there-there were some beautiful shops and found a place where we could get a well needed ice cream!

This is a must do trip whilst in Crete however I would not recommend the bbq part and would exclude this part of the trip if given the option. Also take LOTS of water! There wasn’t much opportunity to buy any whilst out apart from the small shop at spinalonga (3 euros for a small bottle) and then again not until st Nikolaos and it was very very hot!

After seen and heard so much for this island, walking on it was a life time experience.
If you know what happened there you feel a new person leaving the place.
The boat trip was quick and pleasurable as you could gaze upon the marvelous crystal clear waters of Plaka!
