After seen and heard so much for this island, walking on it was a life time experience.
If you know what happened there you feel a new person leaving the place.
The boat trip was quick and pleasurable as you could gaze upon the marvelous crystal clear waters of Plaka!

A day trip out in a boat to Spinalonga is a definite must. You start your trip on a boat which takes you to the island where you will have a guided tour of the island which is filled with history, after that you get a bit of free time to explore yourself. You leave the island and set off for Elounda where you swim in the crystal clear waters and have a wonderful BBQ for lunch, ours consisted of a Greek salad, pork chop, bread roll and a drink, (wine or Fanta)

Finishing you head back to the coach which takes you to the lovely town of Agios Nikolaos where you can wonder around and have a drink an a bit of shopping, a great day out.

Although we would not have liked to have missed the trip to Spinalonga, we would not chose to make it part of an excursion package in future. It was a long day, mostly because the bus seemed to pick people up from every hotel in the region and we did not have much time to explore at any of the stops - Spinalonga, a beach or Agios Nikolai. Apart from the beach, the other two venues bore much more exploration.

The schedule was coach to Agios Nikolai, straight aboard the boat to Spinalonga, tour of the island, sail to beach along the coast with a change to swim while the crew cooked lunch, back on the boat for lunch, return to Agios with an hour to wander and back on the coach.

We loved Spinalonga, but our guide who spoke English and French was extremely grumpy and was obviously much more fluent in French than English as her French commentary was much more detailed. Luckily we speak French, as we were approached by an English couple who were aware that they seemed to be missing a lot of detail and wondered if we could fill in the gaps - which were many.

The boat was very crowded and dominated by one large group, who basically shoved everyone else out of the way.

We left the island and headed for a beach to swim. This was the worst part of the trip as there was not enough space on land for all the people, the paths were steep and rocky and to call the shore a beach was a bit of an exaggeration. Back on to the boat for a BBQ. More queuing pushing and shoving for a pretty inedible piece of meat - one of us had chicken the other pork and a half decent salad. We also noted that the vegetarians in the group were offered canned tuna as their option.

Back to Agios Nikolai which was lovely, but too nice to visit for an hour!

All in all, glad we went to Spinalonga, but would advise using local buses which are regular, air conditioned and cheap to get to Agios and taking a boat from there. Then you can spend as long as you like in each place and buy some lovely food in the many cafes and restaurants in Agios.

Lovely trip over taking about 20 minutes. You have an hour before boat returns however as the boatmen are in a cooperative you can stay longer and return on a different boat. The old shops have been renovated and are now a series of museum rooms. These is a nice cafe at entrance and a ticket office for site if not on a tour. Toilets at cafe are clean but well used ie queues for both sexes. well worth a visit especially if youhave read "The Island" by Victoria Hislop.
