Can't believe on 3 trips to Elounda it's the first time we had been here ..... one of those places you need to know where it is !

Easiest way to find initially is to walk out of Elounda on the road to Plaka until you reach Despinos and walk up the hill just before it ( quite steep ) follow this into the top of the village and there will be signs for The Hope within about 5 mims you will be in a tiny piece of heaven !

Several tables in the bar BUT the real winners are the balcony tables ( a must to book in the evening , lunchtimes not so much ) ...

Small but perfect menu choice of mainly Meze dishes and all the cheapest we have found anywhere in Elounda .....

The tzatziki is creamy and not as garlicky as some but delicious non the less. The dolmades so fresh , and the souvlaki skewers at €1.40/€1.60 are just .... well something that should be on everyone's list of " 50 things I need to eat before I die " .

A whole grilled squid is €7 .... the beer is €2.50 for a large and wine €7 a litre ...... there is a smoked grilled pork dish for 3 thick slices of the most delicately tasting smoked morsel at a mere €4 and the marinated anchovies are also a must...

The walk back into town you can cone the back road , all down hill and brings you into the back of the church on the main square and as a bonus is actually a shorter route to the restaurant but probably best to do via the hill at Despinos first time as there are a few paths you could go up in error if you tried it that way initially ( failing that a taxi from the other side of town where we were at the salt flats was only €6 )

All in all I can honestly say this is a must on anyone's stay in Elounda ... even if it's just to see the amazing mural on the wall and soak up the history of a longstanding locals bar that has reopened after the original owner passed away at the ripe old age of 99 ......

We were told about the Hope on a previous visit to Elounda and I was determined to try it on this visit. Oh my it was worth the wait. and we ate there more than once it was that good. We ate dolmades, tiropitakia. papoutsia. horiatiki the normal staples of the Greek menu. I could wax lyrical about each dish we shared they WERE that good. To top it off it has the most amazing view over the bay of Elounda that it you would be hard pushed to find better to go with your food.

The Hope is a highly rated traditional Taverna a short walk uphill in Mavrikiano and is well worth the effort. It is a small taverna with a great balcony that affords superb views across Elounda. It has a very traditional warm hospitable feeling and serves traditional Cretan food which is prepared to a high standard and served in a rustic style befitting of the restaurant.

The prices are very reasonable and as a result of the quality and cheap proces we have eaten at The Hope many times

One of the most amazing tavernas I've ever been too, authentic cretan cuisine with a meze style (how the Cretans do it, not how the tourists want it) After 10pm the restaurant was filled with locals. Really friendly staff, very welcoming, you felt like you were in their home and not their restaurant. Great atmosphere and fantastic views over Elounda from the terrace. Would recommend it to everyone.

The resident cat was a character!
