“the most amazing views and the friendliest hotel for 19 years”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 4, 2009

My husband and I have been going to this hotel for over 19 years. The view is amazing, and it is the best location hotel in Elounda. It is situated on top of a hill surrounded by olive groves and with views of the sea. The walk into the village takes 20/30 minutes and is so pretty with the olive trees on either side.
The hotel is small in comparison with many of the other large 4 stars, but this is perfect, and you feel like "you are coming home".Anna and her staff make you so welcome, that by the end of the holiday, you will be booking again! Dimitris at the bar,and Costas at reception, feel like good freinds and do their upmost,as do, all all the staff to make your stay wonderful. If you want a flavour of Elounda, and a place of upmost beauty and can call it a home from home...this is the place for you. Hate large purpose build hotels, where you are just a number and you could be in any country? well this will solve all that!!
The rooms are lovely, and many have been refurbished and are stunning...you can lie in your bed and view the sea! Every year we try somewhere new for a week, but always return here for the 2 weeks in the summer....it dos,nt get any better than that!
Book now!

Just had a great week in Elounda staying at the Ilion.
Elounda was a nice low key resort but had plenty of Shops, bars and restaurants set around a working harbour full of small fishing boats.
All the staff from every department were very pleasant and friendly, the hotel was clean and tidy.
The pool area and sun terrace looked quite new with plenty of spare sunbeds.
The hotel is set in an elevated position consisting mainly of bungalows, so the higher up you are the better the view.
The view from the dining room is magnificent! overlooking the sea and Spinalonga Island.
It is a good but pleasant 30 minute level walk from the hotel to Elounda. Taxi back is 7 euros if you dont fancy walking.
We were half board and food is self service buffet with warm and cold sections for both breakfast and evening meals.
My opinion of the food was ok,
A bottle of wine with the meal was from €12
We travelled independent picking a car up at the airport arriving at the hotel at 5 in the morning in pitch darkness.
I would recomend a car if you want to get out and about exploring.
This hotel might not be suitable for the less able bodied or people with very young children as there are quite a lot of steps.
The only negatives for me were perhaps the drinks could have been cheaper and a bit more choice in the hot buffet.
So to sum up we enjoyed our stay here and would come back

We have just returned from a WEEK at the Elounda Ilion. We ARRIVED at the Ilion early EVENING which was great. The COACH TRANSFER from the airport was fine and a great chance to get an idea of the island. The Ilion is OFF THE BEATEN TRACK, in very PEACEFUL surroundings overlooking the STUNNING MIRABELLO BAY and the island of Spinalonga.

The Ilion's GROUNDS are very attractive with lots of WONDERFUL FLOWERS AND FRUIT TREES, GRAPES, OLIVE TREES and so on, creating a wonderful sight and a lovely scent.

People seem to complain about the HILL which is fine and actually quite good exercise to get an appetite before dinner and the slope offers AMAZING VIEWS over the sea and over Elounda.

The ROOM we booked was a SUPERIOR room with a SEA VIEW but we were shown to a small room, which did have a sea view but we thought it would be bigger. We checked with reception and they told us it was a superior room though and we hardly spent any time in the room anyway apart from a PEACEFUL SLEEP EVERY NIGHT as it's very quiet at the Ilion and the surrounding area - great if you like that kind of thing, which we did. The room was CLEAN and the maid changed sheets, towels and emptied bins regularly, so we were very pleased. We did request a few spares/extras for the room and the HOTEL STAFF WERE VERY OBLIGING AND RESPONSIVE. This is Greece though, so don't expect absolute luxury like some high end hotels and B&Bs in the UK, but if you're used to Greece, the Ilion is great by those standards.

The BREAKFAST was lovely, with lots of CHOICE so it didn't get boring and besides, who wouldn't enjoy daily breakfast overlooking the delightful bay. The only slight downside was the water for the coffee and tea, which wasn't very hot and other guests complained about this. The restaurant STAFF were very HELPFUL, FRIENDLY AND RESPONSIVE though and quickly sorted out any issues people mentioned to them.

The EVENING MEAL BUFFET was mostly very nice. The QUALITY of the food was very good and some nights saw very tasty food indeed. We would say though that they maybe tried to cater for too many tastes, although this is understandable as the hotel had a wide European clientelle staying there. Various starters, main courses and desserts were provided and the restaurant is VERY NICE and quite classy, with amazing views of the SUNSET and the SWIMMING POOL LIT UP AT NIGHT. As one other review said recently, drinks are not included in half board or rull board and are paid for as extras.

The SWIMMING POOL at the Ilion is WONDERFUL, very CLEAN, quite large and had plenty of room for all who wanted to swim at any one given time. We only saw two children at the Ilion on one particular day and didn't see any other children again, although that may be down to the time of year. The WEATHER was absolutely wonderful for early September.

If you want a PEACEFUL holiday relaxing round the hotel complex and pool, the Ilion suits well, but if you want a slightly noisier holiday, maybe consider other locations closer to Elounda or more so Agios Nicolaos.

BUSES do run to Elounda and "Ag Nik" and they're cheap although no that regular. However the WALK from the Ilion hotel to Elounda is about 30 minutes and there's not that much traffic to contend with and it's an easy route to follow. CAR HIRE isn't a must, but is great if you do want to EXPLORE other parts of Crete, in which case we would recommend KRITSA, the LASSITHI PLATEAU and even NEAPOLI, a town that sees very few tourists. There is plenty of CAR PARK SPACE for hire cars at the Ilion hotel. TAXIS can be booked through reception. All the STAFF and the Ilion hotel were VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL. The bar by the pool is expensive compared to other local bars, but it's very convenient and a focal point for many of the guests. The Ilion attracts a HIGH QUALITY CLIENTELLE for far more reasonable prices than other hotels nearby on the Elounda coastline.

There was no live entertainment or BBQ nights going on when we were there, but it was September so maybe they stop those things at this time of year. The atmosphere in the bar at night was lovely though, chatting to fellow guests watching the sun set against the mountains in view, or looking out over the moonlit sea and bay with nice music being played from the bar.

We would DEFINITELY HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Elounda Ilion hotel and would certainly stay there again.

  • Liked — The location overlooking the bay
  • Disliked — Not much really - the warm water for the tea maybe, but the Ilion is lovely so we have no bad comments at all!
