“Peaceful and friendly”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2012

My wife and I honeymooned in August 2012 and were hoping for a quiet and peaceful week in comfortable surroundings. We were not disappointed. I had e mailed in advance to request a quiet room and we were allocated room 16 which was perfect. A good size room, comfortable bed, clean bathroom with a beautiful view, and 2 balconies. The included air conditioning was welcome as was the fridge to keep our water chilled. The bottle of wine and basket of fruit in arrival was also a lovely touch. The hotel itself was clean and the staff very friendly. The buffet breakfast and evening meal were always hot and well cooked but could be a bit repetitive. Veal in one form or another every evening! That said, the salad bar was always well stocked with fresh food and we only had one night the whole week when we weren't impressed with dinner. Provided you go expecting reasonable buffet standard food, you won't be disappointed. The pool area and sunbeds was kept clean and tidy despite the constant sea breeze which did help to make the heat bearable but could play havoc if you tried to read a paper! The hotel is on a hill and about 30 mins walk down a back road into elounda itself. We walked in on an evening then it was 7 euros for a taxi back. The are 2 supermarkets within 5 mins of the hotel and the local bus stop is on the main road above the hotel. All in all I would definitely return if I wanted a quiet holiday but if we took the kids I think I would want to be nearer a bit more action to keep them entertained.

We've just arrived back from Elounda Ilion and i feel i have to share my thoughts about this place. First of all, when we arrived, we received a small and rusty room, definitely NOT a 4* standard. After we complained, the agency forced them to give us another room. The most important thing for those who check the rates&reviews to make a decision regarding this hotel is: don't let the pictures lie to you! Their official site show beautiful, modern, well-equiped rooms, when you get there you have to resignate. If they would be honest and share some pictures for the standard rooms i'm sure a lot of people would reconsider.
There is no beach, but unfortunately the reviews about this aspect appeared here to late for me.
If you go Half-board expect NO drinks at the dinner. Not even water. The ashtrays were always dirty.

The only thing i cannot contradict is the view - it's beautiful.

Think twice before going there!

Room Tip: Choose superior room!

Hi there! Below is a summary of our stay in this hotel, which will hopefully help you further together with the fotos attached.

To start with plain facts, we spent in the Elounda Ilion 3,5* four unforgettable days with a perfect view on the sea for around €70 per room/day on half-board for 2 people, which is a good off-season price for the Elounda region on Crete, compared to other hotels in the neighbourhood.

The hotel is located up on the hill, near to the main road and a bus station, from where you can travel to Agios Nikolaos. The interior design is nice, it was clean, chilly and quiet.
The way down to the water (because there is no beach) goes steep down the hill, so it might be an issue for small kids or elderly people. Should you like even sandy beaches, then look out for something else, because there are just none (have a look at the pictures attached).
However, if you seek more privacy on the rocks and adore snorkling, then this is the place to be.

The double room was big, clean and comfy, so almost perfect if it were not for those terrible small black insects, which spent days hanging on the ceiling and attacked you later at night.

The cuisine is average, sometimes plain in taste, mostly not particularly yummy, but the quality of food was acceptable, we had no stomach problems whatsoever and we were not a "gourmet tour".

The hotel staff was friendly, in general for a short stay recommendable.
Fairly well worth 4 out of 5 ranking stars (the only minus goes for cuisine, lack of free WiFi, lack of a sandy beach and really naugthy insects).

When we arrived, it was as the reviews stated, we arrived early hours of the morning, and the hill is horrendous, when you get to the reception steps, the night attendant comes out, and apologises, says he was busy, more like watches you struggle up the hill on the CCTV.
The room for a superior bungalow was not really superior.
The variety of food in the buffet restaurant was not great, we only ate there once, and had to go into Elounda every night for food.
Foreign kids eating off the food spoons, and putting back in the food.
The hotel is not a very friendly hotel, no one really talks around the pool or bar etc.
We chatted to a few British, but that was about it.
The walk into Elounda isn't too bad, but can get boring, defo need to pay the 7 euros for the taxi back, as it is all uphill.
Entertainment at the hotel is poor, not much better in Elounda.
There are no rooms for late check out, unless you are Greek or can talk Greek.
No storage for your suit cases either
Bar staff (Demetri) was great.
Maid service was great.
Wifi is hit and miss, all the foreigners hogging the bandwidth.
Pool bar service not too great, they certainly don't want to put their selves out.
You defo need to book a car to get out and about, or you may die of boredom.
Sea view is stunning.
Air con can be noisy, but good
If you want a quiet holiday, and keep to yourself, this is the ideal place.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view

We booked Ilion via internet trusting comments and pictures/videos on YouTube. It was exactly as advertised. The decking, the pool, the cleanliness, the service were faultless. I noticed a couple of remarks about pool bar staff, but they were so helpful and friendly! Our bungalow was cleaned every day and fresh bedding every second day, as well as towels. The A/C was a little noisy but soon got used to it after a day or two. It's not a sociable hotel as regards guests mixing but you only sunbathe and sleep there so what! Only problem we had was the lack of communication between staff. We decided to dine in the restaurant one night, as we were bed and breakfast and having spent all day in Elounda village, decided against a second 2 km trek. We spoke to reception about this and they said no problem, come for dinner at 20 Euros each. When we did we ordered our drinks and went for our starters. I had just taken my first bite when the waiter told us we couldn't eat because we were B&B. This in front of a dozen or so guests made us feel very uncomfortable. I took the waiter to reception where he was told that we were paying for the meal. Matters resolved with a bit of common sense. Still left me feeling annoyed so didn't really enjoy meal. Hence never dined at night again.
Ilion is a very good standard hotel and well worth a visit, however, it's location detracts a little from it, being 30/40 minutes from Elounda centre and making it necessary for the 7 Euros taxi return. As I approach 60 I feel fit enough to walk down once but not twice, especially on a full stomach! Perhaps a hotel bus???Like a couple of the other places nearby???

Room Tip: Ask for a bungalow

Really nice hotel with a lovely decked pool area, with the added bonus of guests not getting up at the crack of dawn to bag a sunbed. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis and often ate lunch by the pool. Breakfasts were very good and the food at the pool bar excellent quality and value for money. The location of the hotel (30 minutes walk to the centre of Elounda, and situated on a hill) meant the hotel could have tried to charge more for food and drink but all in all we were pleasantly surprised. The staff at the hotel (with the exception of the girls at the pool bar) were extremely friendly and very helpful. The reception staff couldn't do enough for you and the bar staff in an evening knew exactly what cocktails we enjoyed and, despite us not eating dinner in the hotel, always insisted in us sitting at the best seats on the decked terrace whilst they prepared them. Amusingly we paid a little extra for a seaview but when you sat on the chairs on the balcony, event at 5' 10" I had to strain my neck to see over the balcony wall! The rooms were of a reasonable size, with very comfy beds and kept spotlessly clean. The only complaint was that the air conditioning was not good enough. Granted the temperatures were in the high 30's, early 40 degrees but the conditioner needed properly stripping down and thoroughly cleaning - a major gripe from my husband (an airconditioning engineer!). We thoroughly enjoyed the whole holiday and the Ilion would definitely be a hotel I would return to.
