“Basic small room”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

Beautiful location in Elounda with views across the bay to Spinalonga. Friendly staff and a nice little restaurant called the The Blue Sea across the road. Elli the waitress there was just delightful. Rooms are small and struggle to fit two large suitcases. Being 6ft, I was bashing into furniture for most of the stay. Bathroom is clean but like all Greek hotels, flood easily, have little to no water pressure and don't have a window or extraction fan. Breakfast for a small property was excellent and they encourage you to take your tray across the road to the restaurant by the pebbled beach and enjoy it listening to the waves lapping at the shore.

Myself (22), my sister (16) and my mum are just back from a two week stay at the Akti Olous where we were half board. We had a very enjoyable holiday and a very good stay at the hotel.

FOOD/ DRINK
Breakfast was excellent. The buffet style offered a very large selection of foods from cereals, to cheese, salami and ham, fruit, natural yoghurt (continental style breakfast). There was also a hot selection (eggs, bacon, sausages, beans etc) and bread to toast. Hot drinks/ juice were also provided. You could even sit outside in the Blue Sea Restaurant to eat breakfast which was lovely. Overall, breakfast was the best meal of the day.

The evening meals were also buffet style. However, I don't think we would go half board again as the food in the evenings was not the most appealing. The hotel would benefit from labelling the foods, as I am quite a fussy eater and not knowing what I was eating didn't help. A lot of people we spoke to who were half board ended up eating out most nights, however, we ate in the hotel every night. There is always salad and bread at every meal. Drinks wise, you just order and pay at the end of the meal. We always had a bottle of water which cost 1 Euro. Desserts were okay too. The Blue Sea Restaurant (owned by the hotel) had a good menu and if you are half board you get 7 Euros discount per person if you choose to eat there one night. You HAVE to tell them in advance though!! You also can't eat your dinner in the restaurant if you are half board, you just stay at the tables inside the hotel.

The Skybar in the hotel was very nice but always very quiet. Towards the end of our holiday they had a cocktail promotion but even then it was still quiet. The drinks are average price! During the day the Skybar serves toasties.

POOL AREA
The pool is on the 4th floor of the hotel and quite small compared to the size of the hotel. There are also only 14 sunbeds around the pool. We usually had breakfast around 8:30 then went to the pool and always got 3 sunbeds. Drinks are served to you on your sunbed by the skybar staff.

ROOM
We stayed in room 425 which is in the annex block. From speaking to other people, the annex rooms are larger and our balcony could comfortably sit the 3 of us. However, rooms in the annex do not come with a good view! The hotel staff informed us that the rooms with the sea view are smaller and usually only for 2 people. Our room and the rest of the hotel was always very, very clean! The cleaners work very hard to make sure of this. Towels and sheets are changed every couple of days but the cleaners come daily. Our bathroom was great as the shower was in the bath so we had no leakages but again, we heard from other people whose bathrooms leaked a lot! We had air con in our room which we paid for (6 euros per day) but well worth the money!!

On our last day our transfer wasn't until 6.10pm. The hotel has a courtesy room but we could only have it between 4-5 as other people needed it too. Even though the shower leaked and there were minimal towels, it did the job and freshened us up before our flight. We didn't need to pay for the courtesy room and only had to use this as our room was needed for new arrivals later that day!

STAFF
All of the staff from the cleaners to the reception staff to the bar/ waiting staff are so nice and helpful which makes a big difference!

LOCATION
The hotel is located right on the sea front. It has its own beach but it's really small - we usually walked along to the main beach in Elounda because it's only 2 euros per sun bed for the entire day! It takes about 10 minutes to walk into the main square - but you pass lots of lovely looking restuarants right on the sea front on the way along. There are lots of bars/ restuarants to choose from but the resort itself was not very busy at all. For a family who enjoy nights out and entertainment there was not very much going on in Elounda.

WEATHER
The weather was very warm every day of our holiday. One thing we didn't know was that Crete is very windy! A couple of days the wind was gale force!!

Overall, if you are looking for a quiet, relaxing holiday with plenty restaurants then Elounda is the place to go. However, if you are looking for busy busy nightlife and entertainment e.g. karaoke etc then you won't find this here. Recommended places to go whilst in Elounda: Spinalonga (10 min boat trip), Oasis: Cafe/Bar (right next to hotel, run by English couple serving EXCELLENT food), best bar in the main square is "Eden" - Manos the owner is the main man!! Hope this helps. Happy Holidays =)

Room Tip: Rooms in the annex are bigger but do not have a sea-view (or any good views!!) BUT bathrooms don'...

Just got back from a week at this hotel and while I wouldn't rave about it as much as some have the hotel does have much to recommend it.

Number one of course is the price. Booked the hotel as part of a package so I don't know what the room rate was but considering the price of the whole holiday it really was cheap as chips for what you get.

Location
Perfect - right on the water's edge just on the outskirts of the village. It was good to be a bit away from the main square as I imagine staying round here would have been a bit noisy but to get to the main square was only a 10 minute walk and that walk takes you past some of the best restaurants in the village. Right next door is a delicious restaurant with great service (Melisimo I think) and next door on the other side is a cafe / bar called Poppy's which is a lovely spot for a drink too. Some people mentioned the ally to get to the hotel... it's fine, flower filled and not a problem at all though there are a couple of steps.

Services and facilities
The rooftop pool is small and chlorine-y I didn't swim for long in it. As others have said there is no shallow end. Getting a lounger by the pool would require military like organisation as every time I tried the beach towel mafia had got there ahead of me. Same problem with the chairs on the beach. The beach is tiny but the water is much nicer than in the pool. Take swimming shoes as it's stony and if you want a sun lounger best get up before 7am! (Just up the road a little from the hotel is a public beach which was much quieter, I'd recommend spending beach days here)

Service
Was great. All the staff went out of there way to be helpful and were more than happy to answer any and all questions I had. The service was a definite plus in this hotel

Food
I only had breakfast here but it was very good. There was a choice of cooked full English with cooked eggs / boiled eggs / bacon / 'sausage' / and one hot Greek dish every morning plus yoghurt, / limited fresh fruit / tinned fruit / cold meats / feta / and bakery products. The coffee was decent too. For a budget hotel I think this is pretty good.

Rooms
Ok so nowhere is perfect. The room was basic but clean. We had a room in the Annex and the main problem was the noise. You could hear everything that was going on in the other rooms and along the corridor. Also it was difficult to close the doors with out them slamming so this added an extra dimension to the noise problem. It is obvious the place has just been renovated but they need to think about investing in doors that close properly.

The balconies (and I think maybe even the rooms) were bigger in the annex than in the main building. Certainly there was plenty of space for a table and chairs and the room was more than big enough to swing a cat (I could have comfortably swung two in fact). Apart from the noise the room was ok. Be warned the safe is very small - I'd been hoping to leave my laptop in there but you'd struggle to fit a large wallet in it to be honest definitely not a tablet, ipad or anything bigger. Cleaning was through and regular and the room had a kettle, fridge with freezer compartment, hair dyer, glasses and mugs. Again pretty good for a budget hotel.

Overall this was a good choice and I'd happily stay here again

My fiancé and I recently returned from a fabulous weeks stay at the Akti Olous hotel staying on a BB basis.. What a gem of a hotel nestled in a quiet seafront position within 5 minutes walking distance of the main square of Elounda .. This spotlessly clean family run hotel has excellent staff from Soula the very kind helpful receptionist, Monica in the sky bar , waiters and cleaners who were all very pleasant and couldn't do enough for us .. Our room was 207 in the main building which had a side sea view and was very comfortable with fridge kettle etc.. There is a very good choice of breakfast whether you prefer Greek style full English or cereals, fruit, cold meats, cheeses pastries jams all kinds of options to take across the little road to the pontoon and eat peacefully with stunning views ..the rooftop garden area and pool is very nice with magnificent views across Elounda bay however if you like to lounge around the pool you need to be up there at 9am to grab a sunbed as they are limited, which wasn't a problem for us as we like to vary our days sometimes going to the aktis little private pebbly beach or the main municipal Elounda sandy beach with gentle shallow waters and plenty of water sports , somedays we went off exploring the island in our hire car ..Agios Nikolaos has breathtaking views and is only 12km away Crissi island is beautiful and worth a visit by boat from Ilepetra also Plaka a liitle way along the coast road a pretty fishing village with lovely fish restaurants and typical Greek tavernas although there are numerous eateries in Elounda too. On returning from our adventures we found there was ample car parking spaces in the hotels private car park.On our last day we had a late flight @ 1.40am and had to check out of the hotel at midday :/ we mentioned to the lovely Soula our predicament we need not have worried she told us to go to the beach for the day and return at 6.30pm where she gave us a courtesy room to shower and change, she even fetched us fresh towels!! Overall we strongly recommend you try this perfect little hotel which made our holiday near idyllic and my fiancé and I plan to return next year for a repeat performance!Thankyou to all family and staff at Akti Olous .

Room Tip: Ask for the main building not the annexe and a higher floor if possible

We stayed 10 nights on b&b basis. Room was clean with balcony overlooking olive trees on ground floor in block at back. Room cleaned every day by friendly maid. Staff were friendly, Monique was a delight even if she doesn't like birds;-). Only slight disappointment was pool wasn't suitable for short non-swimmers. Everything else was great, close to all the restaurants, bars and shops.Blue sea rrestaurant was good, staff were an asset, loved the waitress's sense of humour. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

Have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel and realy recomend it.Everything was spotless ,every surface clean.I was staying B&B and the breakfast was bliss. The only problem was deciding what to have as everything was great.Everything you could think of was there.....fresh and lots of it.(and at home I don't eat breakfast..!!.).I was in room 312 and it was small but lots of storage space. My only complaint would be the wind making a ghost like noise above the room but after a short time I named him casper and got used to it.The staff are lovely and when I suffered a nasty mosquito bite one girl gave me vinegar to relieve the.pain.I would stay in this hotel again in a heartbeat..

I'll get the negative out the way first, we got landed with room 109, which had a small balcony, on the ground floor (I think the hotel is on a hill, and this room is at the back, so the top of the hill) it was next to a path and overlooked a kitchen. However, we just didnt use it much, and it was a quiet enough room.

The room was lovely, the fridge was very welcome, when the AC was on the room itself was like one big fridge! Nice and clean, towels and sheets changed every second day, but room cleaned daily.

Bed was 2 singles pushed together, as most places are, but very comfy and we slept well. Flat screen TVs, kettles, free wifi were all nice too. The TV had a strange clock on it tho that illuminated the whole room at night, I had to cover it to get a decent sleep, but the clock was handy otherwise. We had a hairdrier, but it was pathetic!

Bathroom was fine, typical greek, the shower flooded the floor, but it dried quickly, and we hung the floor mat out on the balcony overnight which dried it no bother.

Breakfasts were good, altho it got a bit crowded after 9am, so we went early and had no bother. Didnt eat in the restaurant so cant comment :)

Only once in the week could we not get a lounger by the pool, and we just waited a while at the covered loungers before some people moved to let us in.

Another wee moan was that our flight meant we left the hotel at 19.20 yet we had to check out at 12.00. We couldnt get a late check out and the cases had to be left at reception, not in a separate room, it was fine, but we didnt want to leave anything valuable so were a bit stuck hanging around the hotel all of our last day, and couldnt get a shower or anywhere to change.

There is a car park for guests, not many spaces tho but there was on street parking if we had needed it. We hired a car and it was delivered and collected from the hotel.

Room Tip: Not 109 if you want a view!
