We had a great holiday in July on a B&B basis. We were very pleased with the view from our room (101) being at the front next to the large communal terrace & gave us fantastic sea views, also the balcony was larger than most with plenty of space. The room was small but perfectly clean & had a fridge and kettle. The bathroom was tiny & an unusual shape, the shower tray was very small & the curtain only went 3/4 of the way round so the floor got soaked, there is a drain hole in the floor so it wasn't much of a problem. We used the safe at 2 euros per day but didn't need air conditioning as we were perfectly comfortable just leaving the doors open as there was a nice breeze. The breakfast was brilliant, lots of choice from cereal, fruit, tomatoes & cucumber, meats, cheese, Greek version of a full english, toast, cakes, croissants, fruit juices, tea & coffee. We used the restaurant a couple of times, it was great value & quality. All the staff were great & always happy to help & chat about all sorts. I do agree with a previous review about the sky bar and pool area. It was a lovely space with fantastic views, very clean & tidy but totally lacked atmosphere & was very quiet, the snack menu was just toasties or toasties! also the prices for drinks was different from the restaurant downstairs. perhaps they need some low key entertainment? The pool has a uniform depth of 1.8m with only one set of ladders, it was also colder than the sea. The small beach across the road was excellent and we always found sunbeds available. Overall the hotel was excellent & I would happily recommend to others.
Elounda itself is a beautiful little town, not over crowded but has plenty to entertain you with. Plenty of beaches to discover around the area, great for snorkelling and swimming. All the restaurants we tried were fantastic, they always give you breads & dips before the main course & a small dessert & rakki when you ask for the bill.

Room Tip: Think its pot luck what you get at the Akti as we booked a garden view room & got room 101 with...

We spent 11 nights here on a bed/breakfast basis. We had a side sea view which was lovely but the downside was the tiny balcony. Luckily we're not huge! The room was clean, the maids came in everyday, the bathroom was very small, more like a wet room, but we managed. The breakfast was the best we have had in Greece. Cereal, full English, well apart from the sausages! Continental, toast, juice, tea etc. Always hot and plentiful. The location is the best thing about the hotel, well that and the staff but will come back to them. It is literally on the sea front with amazing views. We ate our breakfast in the Blue Sea Restaurant over a very narrow and quiet road, every morning. It was fab. Less than 5 minutes takes you into Elounda town with loads of amazing places to eat and drink. Back to the staff at the Akti Olous, Monique who worked upstairs by the pool and bar was a joy. She was always pleasant and smiley, she would came around to ask if you wanted a drink and would bring it to you, no need to get off your sunbed! "Bill" who worked in the Skybar was also great, would just like to apologise for the night if the Wimbedon final, there was a few noisy, drunk Brits, but he took the banter and kept the drinks flowing. The reception staff were also very pleasant and polite, also the maids, I wouldn't like their job in that heat, but they were always polite and smiling. All the staff were an asset to the hotel. I am a travel agent and would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel, but try and get a sea view.

We stayed at the Akti Olous from 25.06.13 to 09.07.13. First impressions as we entered the reception area were good. The receptionist “Soula” checked us in and asked if this was our first visit? We told her we had stayed in Elounda before but not in the Akti Olous, she said that she was sure it wouldn’t be our last visit. How right she was!!

All of the public areas were spotlessly clean, the floors shone. Our room whilst not huge had lots of storage space and again was spotless and nicely finished. Two French doors led out to a small balcony with a sea view, big enough for 2 chairs and a small table, large enough to sit and have a drink or read your book but not much else. However this is not really an issue as if you go to the top floor of the building there is a fantastic covered roof top patio with tables, chairs and sun loungers. Also on the roof there is a small but well kept swimming pool in full sun all day with a few sun loungers round it and a beautiful bar area with modern contemporary furniture with views across the bay serving inexpensive drinks and snacks.
Our room was cleaned daily with towels changed at least every other day and sheets changed several times during our two week stay. There was a kettle, fridge and flat screen TV. We also used the room safe which did incur an extra charge (€28.00 for the 2 weeks). We decided we would see how we went before having the air con, but after 2 nights we decided to have this also. At €6.00 per night it was the same or less than we had paid at other Greek properties. I got the remote from reception at 10.00am went back to the room and put it on, but no air con. I reported this to reception who immediately went to the room to check then called the engineer. Now things tend to take a lot longer in Greece than they do at home....but he engineer arrived and the air con was fixed by 4.30pm! As we had had this problem they deducted 1 day from the charge even though we had not been in the room to use the air con, an excellent example of good customer relations.
Breakfast was buffet style and served in the ground floor dining room or you can sit on the seafront in the restaurant over the road which belongs to the accommodation. The food was excellent with a good choice, everything from full English to fruit and yoghurt, with continental in between. Everything was hot, fresh and kept full I never had to wait for anything.
All of the staff were attentive and helpful. When we left Soula gave us a hug and said that she would see us next year. I am already looking to book to go back.

Excellent property, with friendly helpful staff, would highly recommend.

Having just got back today i must write down my thoughts on this hotel and resort , The hotel was spotless all the time and smelt lovely and clean , the maids worked tirelessly and took great pride in their work.
A fridge and kettle with cups and teaspoons where provided and toiletries in the bathroom.
We had a groun floor room (102) with its own large patio that had a sea view outlook .
The breakfast was amazing a great choice by greek standards with something for everyone.the roof top pool gets full quickly with only 12 sunbeds, although a small beach on your doorstep with free sunbeds and a terrace with chairs and beds overlooking the sea make up for that. the staff where all very pleasant and helpfull and made our stay wonderfull. The resort was just typically greek no too loud a few gift shops , bars a nd some wonderfull restaurants our favourite was the lotus eaters. there are 2 mor beaches either side of akti olous 1 with fine sand the other gritty both never got full and had showers and wc ,we took the fun train up into the mountains and got some stunning viewes, visiting a local taverna at the top, also took in ag- nic on the bus , and a visit to plaka ,bbut would deffinatley return to elounda and the amazing akti olous

Room Tip: we had a groud floor rooms 102/103/104 have large terrace

Returned yesterday from our third visit to Elounda and the Akti Olous. We were amongst many repeat visitors to this lovely family run hotel. Can't praise it or Elounda enough place is perfect... Hotel is spotless and very pretty, staff can not do enough and are all warm and friendly, food is lovely... But it's all about location, location, location and this one can't be beaten.

Good hotel, yet the overall score for me needs to take into account the room allocation which has an impact on the overall opinion and experience of the hotel.

With us celebrating our first wedding anniversary I thought I would drop the hotel an email well in advance to request a room on a high floor with a pleasant view. I wasn't demanding a sea view or anything flash; we would just like a light room with something to look onto to sip a glass of wine before heading out on an evening and would give us a memorable anniversary.

Unfortunately, our request of a “high floor” must have translated as “bottom floor” and “pleasant view” was translated to “brick wall” as we ended up with room 109 which was right at the back of the hotel and looked out onto an overgrown dirt track and was less than a metre away from the neighboring building (see picture). Not somewhere we got much natural light and not somewhere we could enjoy a glass of wine. We needed to spend 2 weeks with the curtains shut to get any privacy. I appreciate not everyone can win the room lottery and get something good, but a combination of booking well in advance, emailing the hotel with enough notice and it being our first anniversary I thought might get us something half-decent.

Aside from being allocated a poor room everything else in the hotel was fine. Small rooms which we knew about, but the recent renovation is to a good standard. Still a typical Greek wet room but we have been to Greece enough times to accept the Greek “quirks” with the bathrooms. Free Wi-Fi in the room which was an appreciated touch, as was the free use of a fridge.

There are a total of 13 sunbeds by the pool on the roof terrace and 13 certainly was an unlucky number if you missed out on the last sunbeds by a few minutes. The “official” opening time of the pool was 9am, but you could get access from varying times from 8:30am onwards so was a hard one to judge if you wished to be by the poll that day and occasionally you would miss out and find yourselves “sunbed refugees” banished to the beach for the day.

The rooftop Skybar was pleasant but a bit overkill for the hotel. It was a very large bar which more often than not we would find ourselves the only ones in there whether it be morning, afternoon or night. I couldn’t help but think it would be better off scaled back in size and more space allocated for more sun loungers which would also provide more custom for the bar throughout the day. Good selection of drinks, but choices of snacks to pick from were either a toasty, or a toasty. I think they are missing a trick here with not utilising the downstairs kitchen and bringing the food up to offer a wider range of snacks and attract more custom that way too and give guests an option that didn’t involve going to other hotels for lunch every day.

We enjoyed our Holiday, Elounda is a great resort and as a holiday I would rate the whole thing 4 out of 5. Yet our score of the hotel needs to reflect our poor room allocation as this was the experience we received from the hotel.

Would I recommend? I suppose, purely for its location and such. If you are like us and enjoy chilling on the balcony in the room a bit more than the average guest then maybe think a little harder first incase you end up in a poor room as we were unfortunate to do because I have no idea how to improve your chances in the room lottery.

Room Tip: Ask for a high floor room and end up getting a bottom floor room :-/

Just returned from two weeks very enjoyable stay at the Akti Olous Hotel

Rooms contain a fridge with small ice compartment, kettle with cups and spoons. Flat screen TV on wall, Hairdryer and Free WIFI – just ask for the code at reception.

There is also a laptop in the dining area that guests can use free of charge, and a collection of books for guests to borrow.

On arriving late at night we found a cold plate of fruit, meats and cheeses left in the fridge which we thought a nice touch. Before leaving home we had emailed the hotel asking for one of three specific rooms and we were delighted to have been given room 304 which was one of our choices. There is a small safe in the room for 2 euro a day, key to be obtained from reception and we paid at the outset.

Air con is 6 Euro per day but we found that leaving the doors open all night was sufficient to keep the room cool enough. This also had the added advantage of waking up to be able to see the sea whilst still lying in the comfort of your bed!

Room had a lovely sea view, smallish balcony but able to seat two without much problem.

There is a separate lift outside the hotel which goes straight to the 4th floor Sky bar which is never over crowded. Roof top pool has 3 parasols and 8 sun beds on one side and 3 parasols with 6 sun beds on the other. A very nice quiet area. Bar staff service at your sunbed with lovely panoramic views of the bay out towards Spinalonga or towards to old sunken town of Olous.

Elounda we found that all bars offer nibbles, nuts, twigglet shaped snakes and crisps, which are nearly always Smokey bacon!! Large beers normally 3 or 3.50 Euro and a glass of wine likewise.

Coldest beer in town served in a frozen glass is Evangelias, lovely often quiet bar on a corner in the town square, fabulous lady owner. Homemade Raki served at The Venue - drink with caution!! Here you also get carrot and cucumber sticks and crisps and peanuts.

All in One Bar served up a nice assortment of fruit on ice which was a nice change from the crisps/nuts.

Del Mar Café was our favourite. A must visit and say hello to Poppi for us if you go.

There is a trio of musicians who trawl the bars targeting couples and sing a verse of a romantic song, then a hat or cup suddenly appears for a donation from behind the Accordion.

Look out for Yainnis supermarket on the square, here you can get a decent drop of wine for 2.20 euro a litre which you decant into plastic bottles and take back and leave in the fridge.

Elounda market held on Friday, not in the square, but up towards old village, mainly fruit and veg and a couple of clothing stalls, really for the locals rather than tourists.

Spingalonga boat 8 euros from Plaka or 10 from Elounda. Plaka is walkable but a very long and winding road. 1.30 on the bus. 2 euro entry free for Spinalonga island. You can also take the Happy Train

Agios Nickolaos 1.70 on the bus from main square, you can pre-purchase tickets from the cigarette kiosk just down from the taxi rank in the square.

Back to the Akti. We went half board and were more than happy with the variation and choice on offer which during the fortnight was as follows. As well as wide selection of salads every evening, the following were our meals during our stay.

A special mention to Alex, thank you for looking after us so well and getting us the chocolate ice cream!!

We really enjoyed our time here.

We would recommend that they label the evening meals so that guests know what is on offer but that is the only suggestion for improvement we would make. Hotel is spotlessly clean, and is very well situated, has friendly staff, good food and we had no complaints with our room. Should you have any questions about the hotel or Elounda, please pop us a message and if we can help we will.
