“what a farce”
Reviewed September 18, 2008

what a farce after arriving and finding a very steep hill we booked in to be told that we would be taken to our room by bus, i can see why as the hill to our room was even steeper than the first hill what a pity that we could no have the bus all the time.we made sure that when we went to pool we did not have to go back to room until 5ish as we are not mountain climbers.(or mountain goats) we found the hotel staff to be aragant not to helpful(the waiters ans waitresses were the only staff worth talking to).it was a bit hit and miss as to if you got what room you booked as there were numerous complaints while we were there. the food left a lot to be desired as it was not appertising and not a lot of choice.(yuk). the 800 meters to the main road was at least 2kilometers and then another 15 min walk to beach.although there was a bus going down at 10 in the morning if you missed that then it was taxi ride which soon ate in to your euros.having travelled to many places all over the world and never had the need to write a review before this hotel is HORRIBLE and would nor recomend it to anyone

Unfortunately I booked this hotel without reading this site first - which I normally do!
I can fully endorse the bad reviews having lasted just 3 nights at this awful hotel this September 2008. We arrived mid afternoon and yes were very impressed with views from the pool area, but afraid that was it.
Our room was at the higher end of the "resort" and being pretty fit were initially not too bothered. However if you are not able to cope with steep pathways, which in addition to being very hilly are also very uneven do not even consider booking here.
But this was not the worst....
Room very basic - bare lightbulbs.
Walls like paper...sounds like you are sharing a bedroom with your neighbours you can hear everything (and I mean everything!)
Most sun beds broken, yes and nailed down in the shady areas
Howling winds (due to being on side of hill)
Drinks - wow expensive - they make quite a mark up compared to what is charged in all other places!

So the paper thin walls - we were in a block with we think 3 other apartments...the people in the room next to us were very loud in particular one guy who seemed to dominate all conversations with his friends. Then two other apartments decided who could "outblast" each other with music. Then we were subjected to some undescribable noises from a guy on two of the mornings...sounded like he was being murdered - and really this did sound like he was in the bed next to us. I want to laugh reading this now but at the time we could not believe it!!
So after two nights of this we asked the the guy who appeared to be the owner if we could move to another quieter room - told NO quite flatly and told us visitors had to get on with each other and would speak to the residents. They also said the hotel was full. Seemed pretty deserted most of the time we were there! So we decided to leave it at that....BIG mistake!
The noise was worse than ever and after a night of being kept awake until 2.00am and woken at 8:30 by grunting / howling man we decided to cut our loses and leave! We went to the desk explained the situation to the owner and the hotels4U rep. Another room was offered straight away but we were so exhausted and felt we it better just to find a better hotel.
I find the comments that have been made about depends on how many in party / your nationality on were you are placed interesting...certainly rang true in my experience.
Elounda is a lovely spot however and the remainder of holiday was perfect due to stopping at the lovely Alikes apartments. They certainly understand how to look after their customers here. Something the owner of Elounda Residence could learn from!

I have just returned from a week's stay at the Elounda Residence and have to say that I enjoyed staying there and thought that it was good value for money. I also have to disagree with some of the very negative comments about this complex.

We were allocated Apartment 22 which was absolutely fine for our needs - it was clean, roomy and had great views to Spinalonga and the salt pans. As I was on holiday with a female friend we re-arranged the set up of the bedroom to give space between the twin beds. Our sheets were changed once during the week and we got clean towels virtually every day. The bathroom and kitchen bins were emptied daily. We paid 7 euros per night for the air conditioning. This worked fine and did not smell at all. My only gripe with it was that in our bedroom it was quite noisy so I had to sleep wearing ear-plugs.

We were on half-board basis and the food was fine and plenty of it. All of it may not have been to our taste but there was always something to eat and we never went hungry.

The majority of the sun beds around the fantastic pool are bolted down and the reason why became obvious - there could be a very strong breeze which was strong enough to displace an unused bed and possibly injure someone. This breeze was welcome in the heat! There was always beds in the sun or shade so there was no problem with sunbathing or escaping from the sun when necessary.

This complex is on a hill, with all the accommodation higher up than the reception/restaurant/bar/shop level. The hills are very steep so definitely not recommended for anyone with walking difficulties or heart problems but otherwise they are manageable.

There are two roads down to the village - the best one is to left of the complex and is not obvious to all residents - it's a quicker way down and the end brings you nearer to the town than the one leading down from the front of the residence. We never walked back up from the village and either got the mini-bus at 3pm or a taxi (which at 5 euros was a quick, cheap and easy way home and the drivers would take you past reception and up the hill to your apartment).

My experience of this accommodation was pretty positive and I would definitely consider staying here again. I was apprehensive after reading some of the comments that appeared after I had booked but personally my experience was a pleasant one.

A couple of tips/hints - We had dinner one night in The Ferryman which was fabulous and highly recommended. We visited Plaka which is lovely. The beach is stoney so I would recommend you wear sandals for swimming, otherwise it can be tricky getting in and out of the water. We had lunch in "Plaka's Ilios" which was excellent.

On arrival at the Residence we were told they were overbooked, there was no apology. The hotel owner was laughing and joking as we were leaving. We were sent to the Hotel Krini (2star hotel) for 2 days. This actually turned into 5 days stay.
After the five days, we arrived back at the Residence, there was no apology for how we were treated for the overbooking.
The room we stayed in wasn't the one we had booked and it smelt of dirty drains for the whole of our stay.
On our first night they tried to charge us 43 euros for our evening meal, even though we had booked half board.
Overbooking seems to happen quite alot at this hotel. We have been going on holiday to Elounda for eight years, its a lovely resort. This is the first time we have stayed at the Residence and wouldn't take the chance again.

I went to the Elounda Residence Hotel with my Husband and daughter. We all had an excellent time!!
The hotel room was was very spacious and the cleaners came in every day. When we asked for something, it was done in a timely manner. (more pillows for the room)
We were on a self catering basis, so we went into the village every night. The walk down to the village was OK, but we would always got a taxi back (5 Euros) as the steep walk was to much, especially as our room was the highest point. Looking back on how much we spent on taxis, it would have been better to hire a car.
The hotel is set up in the hills and the views are breathtaking. The swimming pool is very nice, overlooking the sea and mountains, with plenty of sun beds around the pool. The sun beds are bolted down, because there is a very welcoming breeze during the day and for safely reasons the beds are bolted down!
We all had a very good holiday and will be coming back to Elounda.

please please read the reviews carefully. and make your mind up.
some who praise this hotel i wonder ????????????????????
first this is not a hotel in the terms we british expect.
ITS A VILLAGE OR COMPLEX
its not a hotel bulding withall rooms over each.
the compex is over a wide area. and you can have a long and hardous walk to meals and pool.
the walk up the road/hill to the complex is manageable if not in the heat of the day,BUT when you get to the enterance the hill is horrendous we called it angina hill 1.when you have scaled this enterance hill you have two sets of steps to get to reception/dining/bar. i am fit but did my back in carrying water up to complex.
apartments in complex can be a long way from dining/bar/pool and if you ar unlucky to be above number 30s you have another horrendous hill to scale each time you go to apartment angina hill2.if you forgot anything there was no way going back for same.
the british seemed to get the highest apartments.
we asked to be moved the day after arriving, for there was a good chance one of us would have come home in a wooden box.
with respect they did move us at the first available time.
there is a mini bus up and down from complex at 10am/3pm
the food was hot basic but never missed a meal.
the little shop and bar are expensive, cheap wine in bar. buy 6 bottles of water in town for near the price of one in shop
we had entertainment one night in a fortnight and that was pathetic. we changed for dinner each night, but dont expext dance floor etc. pool very good one of the best points of stay.
the rooms are small not the cleanest in the world, about the same as basic pontins or butlins.how people can stay self catering is amazing. the best part being the balcony and view
the staff dining/ bars etc were very good and helpfull.
the management only did what they had to.
dont know if we were in the middle of a tiff with management and tour operator.but we had to last day, argue the point for a meal
did it live up to expectations not on your nelly.
would i go back no way.
i can only tell you our view, but it is genuine. make your own mind up.
there are lots of decent hotels apartments nearer to town, that wont exhaust you every time you go out.
cab with tip, from town to complex 6 eur

I have never complained about anything in my life but the way we were treated at the Elounda Residence has driven me to do this.

We booked our holiday well in advance, paying full brochure price. However, when we arrived we were told there was no room available for us. The person on reception did not even bother to attempt to apologise or give us a reason, he simply washed his hands of us. We were sent for two days to the hotel Kalypso (a 2 star hovel above a restaurant and next door to a bar).

Upon arriving back at the Elounda Residence no explanation was given and no apologies were made. The staff, especially the staff higher up the ladder are truly awful. You are processed your money is taken and if you enjoy your stay or not they couldn't care less.

The pool area is also bizzare. The sunbeds are nailed to the floor and are all under permenant shade. There were four sunbeds where you could actually lay in the sun. I truly do not understand their thinking behind this.

Please do not give these people you hard earned money, they do not deserve it.

P.S Elounda as a resourt is amazing. The beach is perfect, the restaurants are excellent and there are plenty of bars to sit in and watch the world go by.
