If one was asked to name the constituent elements of a perfect Holiday one would certainly use the words, tranquility, magnificent scenery, luxury and comfort, impecable service, excellent food and amenities.
Well we found such a place which gets full marks for all the above and this is "ELOUNDA GULF VILLAS & SUITES" in Crete.
My wife and I stayed in "Driros" superior spa villa from the 25th August to 2nd of September 2007. It had a huge private swimming pool with a jacuzzi and water jet and the view from there down to Mirabello bay was intoxicating. Entering the villa was a very large entrance hall with very expensive sitting furniture a plasma tv and kitchenette. Down the stairs and there was the gym. room with a plasma tv again and next to it the main bedroom. Next to that there was a room with a jacuzzi and there were also a steam bath and a sauna. As an Engineer myself I noticed that the villas were well designed and nicely positioned and blend beautifully with the environment without interfering with one another thus keeping their privacy. All materials used were of excellent quality and the furniture and amenities looked very expensive.
We had several memorable evenings at the Argos restaurant by the main swimming pool with candlelit tables. The food was superb and the service was impecable. The people there really cared and the would do everything to make our stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Many thanks.
Without hesitation we would recommend this place and if you don't visit it soon you would only do injustice to yourself.

We stayed here for the first week of our honeymoon. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome and pampered. On arrival we were given a hot towel and water and shown to our lovely suite by Anna, the owners daughter. The suite was absolutely beautiful, peaceful and just what we had wanted. The food at Elounda Gulf is unbelievably good. We had our breakfast delivered to our room a couple of mornings and it was placed on a lovely white tablecloth and set out (see attached pic). The staff were remarkably good and could not have been more helpful or pleasant without being sycophantic.

We could not recommend this hotel highly enough. Please ignore the comments made by the previous person. It was not the responsibility of the hotel to keep the children quiet, surely and if my husband had complained about how many TV channels there were when we were on our honeymoon, I would not have been very impressed! We had other things on our mind.

If you are looking for 5 star service, tranquility and relaxation, then this is the place for you.

Elounda is a five min taxi ride away and a 40 min walk. Each is equally pleasant. I would really recommend reading "The Island" and then taking a ferry over to Spinalonga. The Ferryman taverna on the harbour was very special and picturesque.

We cannot wait to return to Elounda Gulf and I will be writing to personally thank them for making our honeymoon so special.

Just finished our honeymoon at Elounda Gulf Villas and can't help feeling conned:

Promise: We were told we would not have to worry about noise from neighbours & that our villa was extremely private
Reality: We found ourselves surrounded by villas occupied by parents with young and very noisy children (who appeared totally oblivious to the level of noise their children produced!). Not what we were expecting for a romantic honeymoon.

Okay, we thought we'll just stay inside when they're being noisy ...
We ended up using the terrace and pool very little due to the annoying children screaming, etc.. BUT, there is only 15-18 tv channels at the hotel and only 3/4 in English - including CNN/Sky News/Bloomberg. Not exactly entertainment although we know the current affairs very well!

Okay, lets borrow from their DVD collection....
BUT, extremely dated collection of DVDs

When you pay 1000 Euros/night for a private villa you don't expect to have the same noise level as you would on the public beach! What is worse we felt lied to so they could get our booking, knowing that by the time we're here it is too late.

On the plus side, the staff were extremely helpful in general and did their best.

I would NOT recommend this hotel at peak season for any couple seeking peace, quiet and romance!
