From the moment the staff met us on the drive we knew that this would be a special place. They are amazing, nothing is too much trouble and everyone is so friendly and helpful. I have never known customer service like it and it really makes Elounda Bay Palace stand out amongst the hotels to which we have been.
We had one of the cheaper rooms, Smart Club, facing the mountain, but it was large with a small marble bathroom and a balcony. It wasn’t “blingy” (if you want that, upgrade to a more expensive room) but was very clean and comfortable and how much time do you spend in your room? Not much – there’s so much to see and do here!
The two beaches are beautifully maintained with staff on hand for towels, drinks etc – same of the two pools. Having private beaches was a real plus as the beaches in the village are nothing special.
We had full board so had breakfast and dinner in the Aretoussa restaurant with lunch in the beachside taverna, Ariadne. The food is great, fresh and beautifully presented and again the staff are fantastic. You could take credit against one of the other restaurants but we didn’t feel the need. It has been remarked on here that the drinks are expensive but with bottles of wine starting at 22 euros, half a bottle at 12 euros, plus cocktails at 9 - 10 euros we didn’t think it was expensive, especially when you consider this is a five star hotel.
The gardens were a real highlight for us – lushly planted and beautifully lit at night, with lights also in the sea. Wherever you looked it was a delight and we often walked around the grounds after dinner.
We didn’t hire a car as it is only 10 min walk to Elounda, although not much is going on there, except the boats to Spinalonga island. Walk over the causeway and peninsula (45 min from the hotel) for the most perfect beach (Kolokythia?) but not in the day as tourist boats stop there. Go in the morning or evening - it was bliss with the clearest pale blue water.
We took the bus to Agios Nikolaos, Kritsa (overrated) and Heraklion for Knossos. Buses are very regular and very cheap – 7 euros to Heraklion, 60 miles! We could have gone on the excursions as there was plenty on offer and not too expensive eg Knossos and the market in Heraklion was 39 euros each. However we preferred the flexibility of the buses, which are more like coaches anyway and are air conditioned.
All in all this was the best holiday we have ever had. If you have any doubts about going to Elounda Bay Palace, don’t! Just go, you will have a wonderful time!
