“Gorgeous grounds and comfortable luxury of Relais & Chateaux”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

The Elounda Mare is situated in a stunning area of Crete with beautiful views and gorgeous lush grounds. The service at this Relais & Chateaux is 5 star from the exceptional attention paid by manager Harry to the delightful charm of Asia (head of guest relations). The property is very well maintained and the gourmet restaurant The Old Mill is worth a trip to the Elounda Mare should you decide to stay elsewhere. We had a spectacular stay and highly recommend this property.

We were on holiday (4 person) and stayed in a deluxe bungalow (bungalow 2) with a private saltwater pool. We spent our afternoons enjoying the lovely scenery and pool - with occasional trips to Elounda and Agios Nikolaos. There is a private beach at this resort which is fabulous (nice beach bar tender who makes a great drink with bananas) and water activities are available (though pricey). Our bungalow was nicely decorated and spacious. My only complaint with respect to the room was that the shower in the 2nd bathroom was WAY too small. We were 4 women, and I doubt some men would be able to make use of this shower at all (though there is a large spa tub with a hand held shower option as well).

It is worth noting that most guests at this property are 60 years+ in age. It is not inexpensive and the guests reflect this. The breakfast is excellent complete with Cretan specialities as well as cheeses, meats, fresh bread, fresh fruit, cereals/granolas, yogurts, fresh juice, champagne etc (and they will cook you eggs/omlettes, bacon, sausage, pancakes to order). Room service is prompt, and the quality of food is exceptional (not sure why I was surprised given the gourmet restaurants on the property - try the room service moussaka if you are staying in for the evening).

If I am able to return to Crete, I would stay at the Elounda Mare again without hesitation. My only suggestion is that air conditioning be added to the lobby and surrounding common areas (which given the luxurious rooms and gardens, you are not in there very often). We had a delightful stay made even more special by the thoughtful and attentive staff at the property.

Room Tip: Opt for a private bungalow with your own pool. Bungalow 2 is a 2 bedroom / 2 bath that is centrally...

It's impossible to put into words the extraordinary stay at the Elounda Mare. Our room (actually a bungalow) was beautifully and comfortably decorated and outside the large sliding glass doors was our very own saltwater private swimming pool. The service was top notch and the food in the restaurant delicious. I've stayed in the Plaza Athenee in Paris, the Danieli in Venice, The Imperial in Vienna, the Savoy in London, the Carlton in Cannes, the Oriental in Bankok and although these hotels were great, the Elounda Mare is an out of body experience.

Room Tip: Get a bungalow rather than a room in the main building.

For my grandmothers 90th Birthday, my cousins and I decided to organise trips to places my grandmother had never been too. Crete was top her list, so me and one of my cousins decided to take her there. We chose Elounda Mare because of the fab reviews on tripadvisor and because it is Relais and Chateaux, which we usually love. My grandmother is Belgian and food and comfort is very important!
The hotel is really stunning, family owned, mature gardens, lovely big rooms and antique's and Cretan artifacts all over the place. The views are to die for too. The hotel is on the sea font and has its own private beach. We also had some treatments at the Six Senses Spa which was a real treat.
We had a connecting suite with a private pool in the main building of the hotel. The pool was huge and warm and the room very tastefully decorated.
Food wise, we loved the buffet breakfast on the terrace overlooking the bay. We got to try traditional Cretan breakfast: Dakos bread with tomato, feta, olives and capers followed by delicious yogurt with cherry's preserved in honey! they also have western breakfast and all sorts of breads, croissants, cheeses champagne etc... but we enjoyed experiencing the local culture.
We were lucky enough to meet Mrs Kokotos the owner, she advised us on some wonderful places to visit during the day. Apart form the obvious Knossos (most important archaeological site in Crete and home of the legend of the Minotaur!) we went to see Kritsa (oldest church on the island with frescoes dating back to 700 B.C!), Kroustas (authentic village said to have the oldest race of Europeans in the world -STUNNING) great places to eat and interesting archaeological sites. We also had dinner one night at The Old Mill Cretan gourmet restaurant - really something and great value for the quality of the food and service. This is a top notch restaurant that merits a Michelin star.
My grandmother loved her Creten experience and we discovered a whole side of Crete that I had no idea existed. Sun bathing is great, but there is so much to see and do in Crete - why not put on some shorts and a tank top and do both at the same time!
Also important to note that May is when I would advise to travel - it was 28 - 30 degrees, sunny and lovely, but if you want to visit the area you don't want it to be much hotter!

Room Tip: The private pools are really something! Very Private and larger than what hotels usually call a priv...

They do have a hotel but we opted for our own villa with private pool. We were greeted with a glass of champagne when we checked in. It was 5* all the way! Fabulous bathroom with everything you could want and a shower that doubles as a steamer and had more controls than I needed. They left us local treats each day. The pool and garden was our oasis away from it all after running from one tourist site to the next in Athens & Santorini. We were ready to slow down. We didn't realize they would have a formal dress code for dinner in their restaurants so we couldn't dine there, but they looked great! They do have room service that would deliver to the villa and every time they did they set up a white linen table cloth on our patio table pool side with flowers and silver and we felt like we were dining in a private restaurant. All the staff were extremely helpful and quickly took care of any requests. If you are looking for classy high end resort this is the place.

We had a beautiful saltwater pool in our room. What else can I say. The property is gorgeous and serene. Perfect honeymoon spot and beautiful room with a romantic view of the bay. Wow. We went a bit early in the season, so my only critique was that service could be a bit slow at times but always friendly.

Elounda Mare can be truly considered as one of the best place in the area. With its quite atmosphere it makes you fill peaceful and relaxed. I pretty like the hotels design, very special one. The hotel’s stuff is also attentive and helpful. It will be also significant to make a point on the beautiful private beach and on the Yacht Club - seafood restaurant that is located close to it. It opens an amazing sea and mountains view (just a pleasure to have a lunch in such a place), and Manolis who is working on the beach bar is always ready to make you a refreshing drink. There are also two 2 other dining restaurants in the area – Old Mill with its delicious Cretan gourmet dishes, and main restaurant Deck that serve breakfast and dinners.

Beautiful & relaxing! We went end of May 2012 and had the place to ourselves. The service was superb, Manolis in particular bringing our mojitos to the beach!
I can thoroughly recommend a walk to Elounda village and a meal at Olondi restaurant.
