“One of my favouritest spots ever”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

I should start by saying that I absolutely love the Canal Bar. My husband and I make a point of visiting it several times whenever we're in Elounda. We tend to just drop in for lunch after a day on the beach at the other side of the peninsula or swimming from the rocky cove just around the corner, but this time we managed to fit in an evening there too.

Firstly, and most importantly, the quality (and quantity!) of the food is excellent, although it's not just that which makes it a special place. It's very simple, unfussy traditional Greek fare and seafood, but it's done excellently. Portions are very generous too. We're both hungry, food-loving types, but a plate of fried squid, a bowl of Greek salad and some bread leaves us stuffed for lunch (and we usually struggle to finish all the salad).

I can't quite understand why other reviewers have said that they find it expensive. I suppose if you look at the cost of fish per kilo on the menu (as is usual in Greece), it may seem pricey, but you would pay an awful lot more at some of the waterfront restaurants in Elounda, which while they are perfectly good, are not a patch on either the quality or the location of Kanali.

Our usual lunch there of a plate of squid, a Greek salad, bread, two soft drinks and two Greek coffees came this time to 22 euros - that's just less than a tenner each.

Our evening meal, which comprised three 'appetiser' dishes (and included the squid again), a salad, bread, two beers, a bottle of water and two coffees came to 37 euros.

You can't really go wrong paying that for an excellent dinner in a beautiful location.

“Loved this place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2013

this restaurant is just before you go over the bridge from Elounda Island Villas. It is right on the water and if it's not too windy you can sit outside of the covered section of the outdoor part. We ate here 2 and the second time was fantastic. We had sea bass which they fileted at our table. Everything is fresh and nicely served and prepared. The service is attentive and friendly - not overwhelming. It costs a bit more than other places but we felt that the ambience and the food compensated for this. Would absolutely go back again.

“Spectacular views. Relaxing restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 5, 2013

The Kanali is found after a stroll across the peninsula connecting Elounda to the opposite side of the bay.....just keep the sea to the left and it is on the right hand side just over the little bridge.
Situated by some beautiful basilicas the Kanali is a wonderfully relaxing restaurant where you can sit outside and enjoy the views across the salt pans on one side and the Gulf all the way to Spinalonga on the other.
A Must visit establishment... With fantastic fish and the coldest Mythos in Elounda.
Very chilled out... And frequented by Cretans and Tourists in equal measure.
Well worth the stroll even if only to admire the magnificent Yachts that moor close by.
Please make the effort... We did and will most Definately be returning.

“Greek Delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2013

The Kanali restaurant is located off the causeway road to the island of Kolokitha just adjacant to the three windmills and the little church.

The trip is easy by foot or car and there is adequete parking available. The feel is totally Shirley Valentine with the main eating area right by the canal. However,do feel free to go round the back, the view is not so good but it is very cosy on a hot day.

The food here is excellent and we feel that the Greek salad is probably the biggest and best in town. We had calamares, tatziki, dips and very cold wine for lunch. Totally indulgent luxery and reasonaby priced.

We also enjoyed the slouvakis, again with a Greek salad.

However, you do not have to eat here. Why not visit the Kolokihta beach, preferably after 3.30PM when the tour boats leave and pop in here for an iced cold Mythos, served in a frosted glass, fantastic.

The toilets are clean, the staff are friendly and the 'away from it all' factor is 100%.

Whilst you are there, do not forget to have a look at the dolphin mosaics at the top of the path running along side the restaurant, they are very old and quite impressive.

Highly recommended.
