“Great restaurant for fish and meats”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

Really good restaurants need really good food. Great restaurants need great food, but also a great ambience, great hosts, and a great setting, and the Ferryman has all of this. Akis and his partner treat you like family members (sometimes it seems like everyone in Crete does this!), and look after you from beginning to end. The food is wonderful: Grilled Octopus is amazing and makes a very good main course, even if is on the menu as a starter. moussaka is light and lovely and the fish 'stuffed with greens that no one knows the name of but the rabbits love it', is also loved by humans. There's no attempt to upsell or oversell the foot: Akis said the Octopus starter is sufficient as a main and left the option open to add another dish is necessary (it wasn't needed). If the service is occasionally slow at the busiest times, you can forgive it because of the warmth of the people, but also it's so nice to have the time to just chill.
Oh, and one thing, the food isn't expensive: the same price as a meal in our local backstreet Chinese (which doesn't have the same view!)
Our first time in Crete / Greece, and we'll return without hesitation, if only to have another meal here!

A unique place in Elounda. Excellent food by famous Greek chef Yiannis Baxevanis and amazing hosting by Akis and Sophie. The tavern is by the sea so imagine all the above set during your summer holiday in Creta.

“Fabulous food but think we got overcharged!”
Reviewed June 21, 2013

We were staying in a 5* hotel but weren't happy with their restaurants so regularly went into Elounda or Plaka for our lunch. We went to the Ferryman on the final day of our holiday on the recommendation of a relative.
The location is superb and the owner is very chatty/friendly and knowledgeable. He gave us bread and oil to commence our lunch. We decided to have the fish as our main and the owner described how this would be cooked. I thought the menu said that the fish was approximately 19 euros per kg and we thought this was reasonable. We also had zuccini and butter beans as a starter both which were excellent. Our fish came as described and was also very tasty. The owner then proceeded to describe a dessert which was being prepared for us. This was also excellent. However, as neither of us had ordered the bread nor the dessert, we were surprised to have been charged for them both, especially as some of the other local restaurants regularly gave us free bread/starter/cake and, on a couple of occasions we received a free shot of raki :-)
We finished our meal and paying the bill, noticed we had been charged 58 euros for the fish alone. Maybe they charged us for 2 fish meals but we only had the one between us. Our bill totalled 113 euros - we don't mind paying this for a meal had we expected this but feel we were conned a little. However, on saying this, it was probably the best Cretian meal we'd had all holiday.

Excellent food. Pricey, but you get what you pay for.
Make sure you book if you want to guarantee getting a table

“Best food in the area IMHO”
Reviewed June 20, 2013

We tried the neighbouring establishments, but this was (to us) the best by far. If you are a bit of a foodie and not looking for plain and simple food, then come here. The host is charming, and the food is thoughtful, authentic and very well cooked. No standard chewy calamari rings here, but perfectly crispy, squid of all shapes, on a bed of samphire and olive garlic tapenade. Lovely. Even the fried cod (I'd normally run a mile from bacalao!) was good..perfectly dry, with a heavy garlic sauce. Mussels in tomato were huge, fresh and delicious. Fish of the day, was sea bream.. caught that morning. Stuffed with Cretan vegetables, it comes recommended. The Stifado was the best we tasted in Greece. To top it all, the place is very child friendly, the host even offered that his mother and wife would watch our child as we ate; as he played with his new found friends! If in your minds eye, you imagine visiting Crete, sitting by the water, feeling part of a wonderful local family tavern and eating really good well cooked local food, then ...come here.. we did twice and really enjoyed it!
