just got back from Elounda on Tues 4th September, We had researched the maria stella on trip advisor and boy we weren't disappointed , up the wee side entry and you wouldn't even know that you were in a resort, with its beautiful gardens perfect for those who like to sit and read. At the bottom of the lane you step out into the main square of Elounda were a host of lovely restaurants and bars await you. If your looking for relaxation and a getaway from the normal holiday complex this place is perfect. A trip to Spinnalonga and a ride on the Happy train our well worth the money , but make sure you do it yourself as its must cheaper than the organised trips.

We have just returned from a wonderful holiday in Elounda, having spent 2 glorious weeks in the baking sun ( 17th - 31st Aug ). Temperatures averaged 33 degrees up to a massive 41 degrees.
Although the complex, more like a mini oasis hidden away, has no pool, you do have the sea that is 3 mins walk away which makes up for the lack of a pool. The sea is so crystal clear and certainly cools you down after a day in the sun. It is not too deep either, shelving off very gradually. You do however have to keep moving in the shallows, as the fish do like to have a little nibble if you stand still too long, lol.
The local area is outstanding in it's beauty, the people are so friendly and helpful, which makes your stay so special. There are so many cafe's and restaurants that you never have to walk far to get an outstanding meal, but do be aware that the Cretans like to give you free deserts when you ask for the bill, usually with a shot of Raki, so be wary of having a desert with your meal, otherwise you will be fit to bursting before you leave. Most spoke very good English and we always found them helpful and made your stay more memorable.
The apartments are clean and basic, and get cleaned every other day, with clean sheets and towels. The only downfall is the air con cost, each bedroom has a unit and it is 7 euros per day per room, we found having 1 unit and leaving the doors open in the room was plenty good enough.
Mr George who owns the complex is very helpful although he does not speak a lot of English, but you can always get your point across.
Maria Stella's location could not be better, you are right in the thick of things, but once back, it is very hard to hear any noise from the square.
It is also a very safe place to bring children, having a 10 yr old ourselves we found it refreshing to be able to walk around and not worry about being hassled.
We certainly will return to Maria Stella again, as our whole experience was wonderful.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 2nd floor get more sun and better views.

I would mainly like to agree with all that has been said before. Lovely place, quiet but real close to everything. Look out for the air con charges & the lower floors don't get any sun if you like that sort of thing. Great garden, etc etc. If you wanna cook the kitchen isn't great but there are so many places to eat why bother ? The bakery is great for giant croissants.
Don't get a hire car from Avis via the Thomas Cook rep. We did and someone hit us whilst we were parked in Placa. Even tho we had full collision waiver we still got stung for 25 Euro "Admin" charge but the rep didn't know anything about this despite claiming to kno everything locally !!
Brilliant place for people who don't want the 18 -33 culture or Kids Clubs. Loads to do & see, nice beach and plenty of adult evening life.
Don't think about it BOOK IT.

just returned from our stay at the maria stella. i have to agree with all the past comments , and its a lovely place and in the perfect spot for the wonderfull resort . the only slight downside was the air con. pricing. it needs pointing out that the price is 7 euros per night ,per ROOM , so for a week it cost me 98 euros ! i just think it needs to be made clear about this as on the final day someone told us that we could hire a large stand up fan for 10 euros for the WEEK from the oasis bar . thats a big saving for a family on a budget. but i would love to stay here again . any questions , please ask .

Room Tip: a/c is pricey

A simple but clean apartment set behind the main row of shops and bars of Elounda harbour, but its so quiet, a minutes stroll to the local bakery that is open 8 -8 and the local supermarket which is open late, all the restaurant and bar owners were very friendly and most (not all) spoke good english, a good place for families with children and teenagers, very safe at night and lots of locals use the same bars so you get a sense of being in a cretan town rather than a holiday resort, beeches good but man made, water warm enough to swim in, watch out for the tiny fish that nip your skin if you stand still too long! if you want a good relaxing and genuine greek holiday I doubt you will find better. having not long returned from our tenth year in a row, from where we call home elounda crete.this beautiful little town is a tranquil laid back haven for anyone to chill out at. this year we decided to stay closer to the town centre, so we booked a fortnight at the maria stella appartments, just up the side road next to the supermarket. these appartments have been refurbished and are set in a small but pretty garden with plenty of seating, even though they are just off the main road they are so peaceful, thats not to say the town is noisy because it isnt, anyway back to the appartment the one we had was no 3 , compact but nicely done plenty of pots pans atwo ring stove with oven and grill not that we do any cooking, but some like to. the is mr george who is so freindly and smiley and always in the garden pottering around .the appartments themselves are cleaned regular and fresh towels and bedding are changed about three times a week all in all a really great place to stay , if you like fresh bread there is a little bakery along the side road if you do decide to stay at m stella be sure to look for the little hummingbirds there are quite a few of them about as big as a bee.

We stayed at Maria Stella for one week and wished we could have stayed longer. The location was perfect, less than 50 seconds from main square but an oasis of peace and quiet. Mr. George the owner and all the neighbours were very friendly. It was our first time in Elounda and we really enjoyed it. Lots of fab.places to eat only a stones throw from our appartment. We had two lovely meals at the Cypriana (Meze House), the sole, beef stofado and prawns and sword fish were lovely and with salad and wine included were very reasonable. We also liked the Vritomartes. Two mornings we walked along the causway and up over the hill to Kolokithas beach. It is wonderful and if you get there early you can enjoy it before the tour boats arrive. I would also recommend a day at Plaka. We walked there one day and bussed it another. 1 euro 40 cents each way. Against our better judgement we also went on the 3 hour Happy Train trip up into the mountains and really enjoyed it.
