“Great escape”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Stayed at the Domes for a week in October as a family of 3 (daughter aged 3). Bed and breakfast. A very good hotel with excellent staff that provide an all-round 5 star experience that was very relaxing. The Domes is just outside Elounda with fantastic views over the island of Spinalonga (worth a boat trip from Plaka)

What's good / great:?
Service levels were excellent across the board from start to finish - good with children and nothing too much trouble
Nice rooms, well equipped with great views - hot tub a nice touch (we were in a 1 bed suite which was fine as daughter slept in lounge area)
Breakfast is excellent in terms of both variety and quality
The golf buggy ride up the hill to your suite can save weary legs and the children love it
Private beach provides lovely alternative to the pool - plenty of shade available
Very clean
Kids club facilities run by reputable firm
All suites / villas set up means that even when fully booked it still doesn't feel crowded
WiFi seemed to work well everywhere, even on the beach

Could do better:
The food and drink on site is expensive for what it is and lacks variety (apart from breakfast). We went to the Cretan dining experience one night and it was not really worth it. More variety at lunch would be better. Better value to head in to Elounda and try some of the restaurants there, especially if you are with children, for a bit of variety and, in some cases, great quality.
The main pool area doesn't feel particularly luxurious, although perfectly fine and the beach is a better option I think.

All in all, an excellent hotel.

Stayed in the first two weeks of October and had a fabulous time at the Domes. Staff and service absolutely brilliant. Special thanks to George, Alexandra and all the fantastic beach staff.
In common with other reviewers we found the number of children to be high but the hotel has addressed this by allocating a specific area in the restaurant for family groups and setting up a quiet area at the beach. We also found that eating in the outside quiet area of the restaurant was preferential but we would reccommend sitting next to one of the lamp stands otherwise this time of year seeing your food becomes tricky when it gets dark. Take a trip from Plaka to Spinalonga (€8 for the boat + €2 entry) to experience first hand leper colony so beautifully described in the novel The Island by Victoria Hislop. Would certainly holiday here again and would be pleased to recommend it to anyone who enjoys a peaceful holiday in the sun!

My accommodation at this hotel was something really beautiful! My need for relaxing found the perfect match.. a lonely beach with trees, with a view of the island Spinaloga.. a beautiful room with comforts I wanted, tasty and fresh breakfast and wine nights under the sound of a really talented pianist (I hope I remember correctly his name - Konstantinos, if you go I hope you are lucky to hear him..)! Your money is really worth it every penny! People who worked there in the end were my friends (something that my girlfriend didn't like that much!). In a few words..everything fell so nice and smooth..like a Mozart concert in Austria..where you go and afterwards you feel so refreshed and relaxed!

We decided to treat ourselves to a last week away this year and we were not disappointed. From the private transfer from the airport and then being greeted with a glass of bubbly over check in everything was superb. We were taken to our room and were really pleased with it. Large lounge upstairs with a big bathroom with jacuzzi bath, separate shower etc off. Then we were taken down stairs to a well appointed bedroom with yet another bathroom the same off this and also a small balcony. Back upstairs we had a lovely large terrace with fantastic views of Spinalonga and our hot tub (which we used every evening before getting ready for dinner).
The staff are excellent and always had a cheery greeting for us when they passed by.
The food was very good and well presented. We were lucky enough to always get a table outside for both breakfast and dinner and were looked after really well. Yes, maybe the price of drinks is a little high but we still enjoyed a bottle of wine each evening and had a few drinks at the beach bar. We bought some wine in Elounda though and kept it in our room for a drink on our terrace. The beach area is good but unfortunately it was too cold to swim on this visit. Plenty of sun beds and an area for adults only if needed.
Plaka is a cute little village 15 minutes walk away. We took the boat from here for our trip to Spinalonga. The Carob Tree was a good place to drop by for a beer. Elounda is larger with plenty of restaurant choice but we only ever had a snack here as the food at The Domes was very good. We took a taxi most times which was 7 euros but we did walk in once and it took about 45 minutes.
The bus stop is directly outside the Hotel and we took one into Agios Nicolaos. Worth a day out to here but we preferred our location.
Finally just a note on the Spa. My husband used the fitness room most days and I had a lovely massage which was very good value as it was one of the offers.
We have recommended this hotel to our travel agent when we got back and we will definitely visit again.

Room Tip: Our suite 204 was fabulous.

I had reviewed the hotel before we booked and I can honestly say that we were not disappointed! After a quick check in we were offered a glass of champagne and were given a welcome talk and explanation of all the facilities afforded by the hotel followed by a tour.

The customer service extended to guests by all members of the staff was second to none! The food in the main restaurant was extremely good with excellent presentation and the pianist added to the ambience. The Barbecue evening was also very good with great entertainment.

One of the main concerns which was raised with the management was the price of drinks which were too expensive. The main bar in the reception was beautifully furnished but totally lacked atmosphere because very people used it.

The location of the hotel was also excellent with a short walk to Plaka and ferry service to Spinalonga and also walking distance to Elounda.

Going back to customer service, one of the things that I was most impressed with was on the day before our departure when we were on the beach, a member of staff came to have a chat with us about our experience at the hotel and then we were presented with a small bottle of champagne and some lovely canapés - what a lovely touch!

Would certainly recommend this hotel!

Room Tip: The lower level rooms are probably better for those who may have mobility problems although buggies...

I stayed at the Domes in October for 2 weeks with a 7 month old & a 2 year old. We booked a jacuzzi room but were gratefully upgraded to a room with a private pool.
Our room was a 1 bedroom suite so we kept our baby in our bedroom & slept our toddler in the living room. Both rooms had doors into the bathroom & onto the large balcony so it worked well for us.
We ate most nights in the Thalos buffet as we were on a half board holiday & I don't really understand where the previous reviewer is coming from with his complaints about service there as the restaurant is huge & We never saw it more than half full...and this was at a time when the hotel was fairly full. The staff in the restaurant (& indeed the whole hotel) were fantastic. The noise made by all the kids staying in the hotel must have driven them mad but they were always incredibly helpful & friendly....even when my very messy 7 month old dropped a piece of cucumber on the floor for the hundredth time! Special thanks in the restaurant to to maggie, Sergio & the manager Kiki. I was very grateful for all their patience & cuddles for my little ones!
One issue I have with this hotel is that the swimming pool areas are fabulous but we never got to use them as the pools aren't heated & are utterly freezing. We hardly saw a single person in toddler or adult pool for the whole 2 weeks which is a shame as we normally spend a lot of time on hol in the pool but didn't go in once this trip.

Luckily the pool issue is made up for quite considerably by the beach. For toddlers & families the beach is fantastic. The water is calm & the loungers (with lots of shade for little ones) are on a lovely stretch of beach meaning mums & dads can relax (if the kids will let them) & let the kids play on the beach or in the shallows knowing they are safe. Thanks on the beach staff go to nikos who reliably brought us buckets, spades & other beach toys every day, helped us carry the pram up & down steps Etc & was generally just lovely. Katerina & constantina at the beach were also a great help & made my baby & toddler feel very special with all their kisses & attention.
There are golf buggies which drive you to rooms to save walking which we didn't really need as our room (103) was very handily quite close to the main hotel however nikos, Christian & arti very kindly took our 'tractor' mad daughter on a few drives around the hotel, just to sate her begging for a ride!

All in all we loved our holiday & would definitely be booking to go back if the pool was heated...and I suspect we may head back there next year regardless of the freezing cold pool as we've had such a great time! If you've got toddlers or young kids you can't do much better than this.

We've just come back from the Domes of Elounda after a week's holiday there. The hotel is beautiful and in a fantastic location. Our room was spacious and had a lovely bathroom and shower. The staff are excellent and helpful in every way. However we had two issues. 1) We have never been to a 5* hotel before where there is no waiter service at the evening meal - at the Domes it is buffet. 2) The hotel caters for families with young children and not for couples, young or older. The evening meal was bedlam in the extreme. Screaming and wailing children each and every night. When they weren't doing that they were running around the tables and it wasn't easy to enjoy the food. The bar is extortionate - 2 gin and tonics cost 20 euros - during happy hour the cost was 14 euros. We didn't get change from the 15 euros we put on the bar though!
As I said before the staff are excellent and have the patience of Job when it came to the antics of the children. The parents had absolutely no control over them at all. Although there are supposed to be 'quiet areas' where you can get some peace I'm afraid these are not respected by the children or their parents.
