My husband & I are 65 years old, fairly active and enjoy a bit of “off the beaten path” both for lodging and activities plus the typical historical/architectural/natural sites of the area we visit. We generally avoid city lodging AND are very pleased we chose to stay in Chania at Kasteli Studios & Apartments during our three weeks exploring 3 Greek Islands in October 2015.  The Innkeeper, Alex, was very friendly, welcoming, and helpful.

Our suite was quiet, spacious and located on the top floor of a building accessed through a lovely residential courtyard.  Some of the provided amenities which made our stay comfortable included guest-controlled AC; a fantastic shower with lots of power & hot water; a refrigerator stocked with complimentary beverages; a large private balcony with table and chairs, and a space to dry clothing; AND off-street secured parking—an exceptional and hard to find benefit!!!

From Kasteli it was a safe, very short walk to places of interest: waterfront; Venetian Harbor & lighthouse; Exhibition of Traditional Ship Building; Market/agora; fortress western wall; arsenal; religious sites; and fantastic restaurants. For breakfast we usually enjoyed a short stroll to a nearby square where we sat outdoors and explored local fresh pastries & beverages.

Many western Crete sites were just a day trip away (Samaria & other gorges; Gourtyn, Phaistos, & Agia Triada; a multitude of beaches; etc.). In hindsight, we wish we had arranged to stay longer in Chania at Kasteli.   For us, Crete needed more than the 9 nights total we stayed (4 near Agios Nikolaos, 3 here & 2 in Iraklio).

A great value. Would definitely stay there again.

My wife and I have just returned after staying a week at the studios, what a lovely surprise it was, the best bits in no particular order were:
A great clean shower, daily maid service, a welcome pack, a Kettle upon request, ample towels, peaceful central location, Alex’s hospitality, very clean throught out , free safe, ample wardrobe space and very important private parking as the roads are really tight.
The worst bits
Leaving such a wonderful establishment. Highly recomended we will be coming back again.

Room tip: email Alex he is very helpfull.

Only 40 minutes from Chania airport, a relatively small complex. Spotlessly clean, excellent swimming pools for all ages, well maintained. Lovely breakfast room, with good choice of buffet breakfast. Light, airy bar with friendly staff. Spotlessly clean apartments, tastefully planned in lovely well cared for garden settings. Beware you have to pay supplement for air conditioning and safe.

Room tip: Go for first floor overlooking gardens.

We were not originally going to stay here but the hotel we were looking for was full and recommended Kasteli. They had a studio which was excellent with everything you could want apart from a TV. The room was clean and tidy and the price was reasonable with the addition of private parking which was important in that area. It is also in a great location, handy for the port and all its restaurants and old town, give it a try.

I picked Kasteli more or less at random but I'm so glad that I did. The reasons that this is the place you should stay are:

1) Location. It is exactly centrally located to everywhere you would want to be in Chania, including being only steps from the harbor. However, since it is on the hill in a courtyard it manages to be surprsingly quiet. After seeing the chaos in most of the harbor and adjacent areas I realized how much I lucked out by picking the quietest possible place that was still very close to everything/

2) The kitchenettes. At least my room, and probably all of them, have a refrigerator, sink, hot plate, and dishes and silverware. This is perfect for having breakfast at the place and storing your restaurant leftovers.

3) The owner, Alex, will help you do anything you need, including renting a car. He has a small parking area which they will deliver the cars to and pick them up from. He's also always happy to make coffee, and it is real coffee, fresh ground and in a french press, not the terrible stuff they are mostly serving around town.

Of course this is not the place to stay if you want free massages, a free continental breakfast, room service, a doorman and all of that, but for the more independent yet discerning traveler it is exactly what you want.
