“Lovely - generous hospitality, good location and value.”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

Nicos and Ioannis were charming and exceptionally helpful - they really added to the pleasure of our stay. The breakfasts were wonderful - full of surprises and kept us going till the evening. Served in the lovely shaded courtyard - there is also a roof terrace for catching more direct sun. The location is excellent - v close to the harbour (5 mins walk) in a lively slightly scruffy neighbourhood but with lots of street activity, interesting buildings, lovely squares, cafes, restaurants and above all felt 'real' rather than a just a tourist location. Parking a bit of a lottery but we always found a place on the streets even if 1/4 mile away sometimes - not a prob to us but could be for some people. (There is pay- parking across the road).
We would very happily go back to the Splanzia.

Room Tip: Rooms over the courtyard are quieter.

My friend and I, along with my son and his wife, had a four night stay here in October 2012, following a wonderful three night stay at the cheap and fabulously cheerful Hotel Sifis in Loutro (also reviewed). When we returned home, I ummed and aahed about whether to give feedback on Hotel Splanzia, eventually choosing not to write a review at that time. The difficulty I faced was that, whilst the four of us were quite disappointed with some aspects of the hotel, the two brothers who run the hotel were so welcoming and friendly that I almost felt like I would be betraying their hospitality by writing anything other than good about their establishment. However, the passage of time has dulled that feeling, hence a late, but honest, review of our stay.

This hotel describes itself as a ‘boutique hotel’ and, therein, for us lay the problem. The hotel’s use of the word ‘boutique’ immediately suggests that it is something special, luxurious and sophisticated. It is not. First impressions were good. Hotel Splanzia is an old building, of historical and cultural interest and with a decor that reflects the Turkish and Venetian influences of the island’s past. At first glance, the room that my friend and I shared appeared quite stylish and had some character, having retained some of the building’s original features. The room was really spacious and had steps that led down to the pretty courtyard area where breakfast is served. However, the room lacked proper comfort and had a number of impractical aspects which were irritating and which the hotel’s designer had clearly overlooked. Firstly, the bed was not the most comfortable and I struggled to settle, although, to be fair, once asleep it did not disturb me – I just woke up aching the next morning instead! Secondly, and this was a serious annoyance to us both, the window blind was just for show. The window is recessed and, instead of the blind being fitted right against the window, it has been fitted on to the outer side of the recess, resulting in light pouring in at the crack of dawn and waking us. Staying with the issue of the blind, bizarrely there was no hook at either side of the window to which the pull cords could be attached and thus keep the blind open. Needless to say, my friend and I had to be quite creative! Thirdly, the cupboard unit that is in the room (and, from peeping inside another room when it was being cleaned, it seems that the same piece of furniture may be in all the rooms) again seemed to be for show. It was a large piece of furniture, more suited to a living room than a bedroom in my view, with a mirror that was below the centre. As there was no stool on which to sit, and no knee hole in the unit either, trying to stoop down and use the mirror for styling my hair was hopeless. Furthermore, as the hairdryer appeared to be hardwired into the bottom cupboard of the unit, it was impossible to lift out and use anywhere else in the room. Finally, the bathroom is very small and quickly steamed up when showering. Although there is a small window in the bathroom, the window is sited right next to the shower and just above the toilet, as well as being in the direct view of the courtyard. As it was only possible to open the whole window, due to it not being the split opening type, we were unable to open the window if we were using the bathroom and whilst people were using the courtyard.

On a more positive note, I cannot fault the location which is close to the centre of Chania and even closer to a number of good eateries, if you do not want to go far to eat. Breakfast was home cooked and was very good with plenty of variety, including freshly prepared pastries, crepes, fruit, lovely creamy yoghurt and hot food such as eggs – basically, the full works! However, because everything is freshly prepared and because there is only one brother serving, service could be slow, especially if a few other tables were occupied. We had a significant wait on our last morning, which was unfortunate because we needed to get to the airport, and ended up having to leave before we had finished eating.

I know that I am at odds with the vast majority of other reviewers who have stayed at this hotel, and who appear to have been blown away by their stay, but Hotel Splanzia was a real disappointment for us. On its website, the hotel claims that ‘the attention to detail is exquisite’. This is the point with which I strongly disagree. In my view, this hotel is not a haven of luxury and the comfort and practical needs of the guests have been compromised by a desire to create a 'boutique' image. There is no wow factor here and it is definitely a case of form over function.

Thinking we were likely to find Chania too hot and busy we only booked two nights. This hotel made a city stay wonderful. Sitting now in a flower filled garden enjoying the last of my coffee. As other guests have said, the breakfasts are a feast. Fresh fruit and orange juice, freshly made galatobureko ( yes at breakfast! ) Any combination of eggs and vegetables and bacon you can dream up. Only problem is how to fit it all in and still be ready for an evening meal.
The bathroom is a little small but after decades of coming to Crete I don't come hereto be impressed by the plumbing. Our room is large, airy and very well furnished with beautiful curtains and fabrics. My only problem is with the guest in the adjoining room who is obviously smoking, the smell of which comes into our room. We are at the front, a cool room over the street, very quiet.
Since guests move on, I will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Each room has it's own character, the staff are very helpful if you want ro have a choice.

This is an extremely pleasant small hotel which makes an ideal start to a trip to Crete. We were met and welcomed by one brother who kindly walked us and the car to somewhere we could park (which is not the easiest although for EU 6 per day you can always park in a garage across the road) and then gave us advice on our Trip Advisor shortlist of restaurants.

The rooms (or ours at least) are reasonably well furnished although perhaps for local style as much as comfort. Drawers for clothes would be helpful and not just a gigantic wardrobe and lights above the bed which you can read with. I'd also agree that one day some new mattresses might well be an investment but this is Greece after all!

Brother 2 is equally helpful and runs around serving breakfast with remarkable efficiency and yes these were truly outstanding. In addition to everything else - and there was everything one would normally expect on offer - I could not manage the banana pancake on day one and so said I would give it a miss on day 2 only to find that there was something entirely different the next day. A real feast.

The location as people have said was excellent although some might perhaps prefer somewhere with a view of the bay (but likely to be noisier there). But a reasonably priced good choice.

I agree with the other reviewers - the breakfasts in the courtyard were great; the hosts were pleasant and helpful; the hotel is in a terrific location 5 minutes from the harbour.

Our room was large and charmingly decorated.

We were on the second floor facing the road and, unlike Angel A, we did not find street noise a problem - there were shutters and we always wear earplugs when traveling. Our problem was the poor internal soundproofing. The woman in the room next door, who I believe is a long-term resident, had a hacking cough and it almost sounded like she was in our room. I was woken constantly during the night, despite my earplugs, and what would have been a 5 star rating consequently dropped to 4 star - I was almost tempted to make it 3, so irritating was the noise. The owners really need to think about improving the interior sound-proofing.

An excellent family run boutique hotel in a converted Venetian town house. Just 8 bedrooms. The most extensive breakfast taken in their lovely courtyard. After this you don't need to eat anything for the rest of the day.

The brothers who run the hotel are both charming and helpful. Many guests from other countries including Sweden, France, Germany, and Canada

A few minutes walk from the harbour, as well as the market and shops. The hotel is located on one of the roads in the old town and is quite narrow and does get busy.

Well worth staying and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves

We were in Chania in September 2010. We spent a night at this hotel because we wanted to check out the lovely town. The hotel is within walking distance to the town and the lovely venetian style harbor. As the road outside the hotel is narrow, we had to unload the bags a lil further up and was lucky to find street overnight parking with some assistance from the hotel staff.

3 of us shared a loft room and it was spacious enough. Breakfast was in a little patio/ garden at the back of the hotel on the ground floor. We were surrounded by plants and flowers and it was lovely. Cooked breakfast was lovely.

All in all a nice hotel to start our visit in Crete.
