“Holiday in Chania”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 29, 2013

An excellent family run boutique hotel in a converted Venetian town house. Just 8 bedrooms. The most extensive breakfast taken in their lovely courtyard. After this you don't need to eat anything for the rest of the day.

The brothers who run the hotel are both charming and helpful. Many guests from other countries including Sweden, France, Germany, and Canada

A few minutes walk from the harbour, as well as the market and shops. The hotel is located on one of the roads in the old town and is quite narrow and does get busy.

Well worth staying and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are quieter

We were in Chania in September 2010. We spent a night at this hotel because we wanted to check out the lovely town. The hotel is within walking distance to the town and the lovely venetian style harbor. As the road outside the hotel is narrow, we had to unload the bags a lil further up and was lucky to find street overnight parking with some assistance from the hotel staff.

3 of us shared a loft room and it was spacious enough. Breakfast was in a little patio/ garden at the back of the hotel on the ground floor. We were surrounded by plants and flowers and it was lovely. Cooked breakfast was lovely.

All in all a nice hotel to start our visit in Crete.

I've been to Chania more times that I can count on 2 hands, and stayed at Splanzia 3 or 4 times now. A stay here MUST accompany any visit to Crete! Beautiful calming rooms, roof top views, fantastic location (don't miss 1821 square), an atmospheric few minutes walk to the centre, breakfast to die for (raved about for months after our return)! Ioannis and Nikos, and the rest of the family, are brilliant, charming hosts. Don't miss this gem before it becomes impossible to get a room in!

Room Tip: They are all beautiful...

Breakfasts were fantastic and location is good. However, the beds/mattresses were old, hard and creaky. We had a second floor room facing the road and it was noisy. Sleep quality was poor. The room was dark and the bathrooms were small. We wanted to cut short our stay by a day (3 nights to 2) and asked Nikko to help place the room on the market. He was not helpful. We love Crete and will definitely return soon but unfortunately we will not be staying at the Splanzia.

Everything was execellent. Perfect location (access to old town as well as shopping centre on foot), nice clean rooms, lovely breakfast (including traditional Cretan delicacies), very very friendly people. They went out of their way to make our stay a memorable one. We had fresh fruit in our room. We shall definitely stay there again if we visit Chania again.

Yannis and Nickos,2 young, gentile and very friendly owners of this quaint and hospitable little hotel truly contributed to make our stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
Their outstanding breakfasts in the hotel's courtyard amazed us and their hospitality even more.
The only complaint, the mattresses need to be upgraded. That would complete the almost perfect conditions of this wonderful little hotel.

Most of my ancestors are from Crete and this was my first Cretan experience. When Yiannis and Nikos greeted us upon arrival I knew we'd be very well taken care of. Navigating our way by rental car to the hotel was a bit confusing and we were greeted warmly and had fresh fruits, water, beer and wine waiting for us in our room. The first thing they did was take out a map and mark off places to eat and see while we were there....but listening intently to what types of people we were so he could advise us properly. We really appreciated getting a tip on more local venues rather than the typical tourist fare. Every time they advised us to go to a certain beach, restaurant, small taverna, hike, they were spot on and it was perfect.

Now --- about the breakfast....it was spectacular and the home cooked food prepared by their beautiful mother (who looks like their sister), was to die for. We don't usually eat this much food but how could we turn down home baked Cretan food....it was delicious. They also served us fresh fruits of the season and fine Greek yogurt. Great service and we all gained about 3 pounds on this trip.

The rates are spectacular for being in such a great location but away from the major tourists by just a few blocks. Someone was always there to help us out. I would advise trying to get a garden view room because the street is quite loud late into the evening. Be specific, we tried but weren't able to get the room we requested. It's an old building and the bathroom is rather small with nowhere to plug in a hair dryer, etc. Our room was a tight squeeze with the spiral staircase for a upstairs bunk close to our king bed....but we adjusted just fine. Chania is very special....just get out of the touristy areas and enjoy some walks in some very old villages and take it all in. Take a walk on the wild side, everyone in Crete is very loving and generous....Opa!

Room Tip: Away from the loud street.....
