Casa Leone is a gorgeous hotel right near the harbor with wonderful breakfasts and extremely kind owners. Our daughter, Laura, got an illness contracted by everyone on her school program in Athens and was very sick. The owner of the hotel, Nikos, drove her with me to the hospital and waited with us for THREE HOURS until she was seen by a doctor. We were in strange country, and didn't speak the language and his kind presence and concern as well as that of his wife and housekeeper were extraordinary. We want to go back to visit them again and spend more time in this beautiful and very special hotel by the harbor. It is just as beautiful or more beautiful than the photographs!

A great place to stay as others have already stated. We stayed in the honeymoon suite, which I'd recommend solely for the large private terrace and that it is not on the same floor as the lobby/breakfast area. The proprietors were very warm and pleasurable. I thought the bathroom would have been larger in this room, but it was pretty small with a standard tiny shower stall, but the fixtures, etc. were nice. There were tons of places available for rent all over the "old town", but this place looked and seemed to be the cream of the crop.

My husband and I stayed in the Casa Leone for four days in August 2007 for the first leg of our honeymoon. We picked the hotel based on all of the glowing reviews on this site and we were SO, SO glad that we did. The hotel was everything we hoped for and more.

First of all, our email communication with Antonia at the hotel was great. She always responded quickly and answered all of our questions promptly. She was out until our last day there, but the other people working were very helpful. Antonia made us a fabulous breakfast our last day (they had breakfast every day) and sat down and spent a lot of time with us and another couple explaining where we should go. She loves to share and was VERY helpful. You can tell she truly loves her job. One good recommendation she had was to keep walking beyond the harbor.... there are tons more waterfront restaurants over there.... ask her about it.

We stayed in one of the rooms in the front with a balcony... it was SOOOOOOOOOOO fun to be able to sit out on our mini (and I do mean mini, but that's all you need) balcony with a bottle of wine at night, people watching. The area where the hotel is located is a HAPPENING place... these people are out partying (loud music included) until 4am or so. The sound does travel from the bar below the hotel, but you're not going to escape that if you stay anywhere on the harbor.

Our room was great.... the bed was up on a loft above the stairs and below, there was a sitting room/living room and the bathroom. There is a safe in the room to store valuables.

One day, we rented a car to drive to Elafonisi, a beach on the western side of Crete, and the car rental was SO easy. The people at the hotel called the company for us, put us on the phone and we agreed on a price and a time to meet. The car people showed up at the hotel the next morning and walked us to the car. The hotel is located fairly close to a parking lot. I would DEFINITELY recommend going there.... it's a stunning beach. The narrow, windy roads are quite scary, though.

Getting to the hotel from the airport was easy. We had a cab take us... I don't remember exactly how much it cost, but I believe it was under thirty minutes and pretty reasonably priced. They can't take you right to the airport... they take you to the parking lot nearby (no cars can go on the roads near the harbor area). It was quite difficult trying to find the hotel... (it would be difficult to find any of them). ASK someone right away to help you... I'm really good at finding places, but this one I could noooot find.

There are tons of cute little shops all near the hotel that stay open til late at night... 11pm or so. All the little alleyways are lit up and are really beautiful.

Other recommendations -- HIKE THE SAMARIAN GORGE! It's so easy to get to. there is a bus station that's about a 10 minute walk from the hotel, and we took the early morning bus out to Samaria. Take the first bus, or it will get too hot and crowded as you are finishing. We're in pretty good shape and had no problems with the hike.... though it did start to get hot. LAYER, wearing or bringing a bathing suit so that at the very end of the 12 mile hike, you can chill on the beach while you're waiting for the ferry that takes you back. It's a really fun day trip. Email me if you have more questions about it.

There are many sunset cruise boats... that was fun.

A restaurant recommendation: Fortezza. You take a fun little 1 minute free boat ride at the end of the harbor over to it and you have a GREAT view of the harbor once you're there. The food was excellent (we went twice).

A food recommendation: BOUREKI. I loved it! It's really only found in Crete... we couldn't find it anywhere else we went. Yummy.

We were taking a ferry to Santorini from Heraklion, so our last day we took a bus from Chania to the city and spent the night there. Chania was SO much more fun than Heraklion (if you're trying to decide between the two), but we're still glad we spent the night there so we had no worries about making our early morning ferry.

SO.... to summarize.....
The hotel was FABULOUS. I looked up tons and tons and tons of hotels and was so happy I picked this one. (I remember another one we were considering was the Best Western Port Veneziano... but I'm so glad I didn't pick that one... it was further away... much more quiet, though, if you're looking for that). The rates were good, the staff was helpful, the breakfast was good, the location was phenomenal. It is a very charming place and you will be excited to stay here.

Please feel free to email with any questions.

The Case Leone was perfect. Antonia was so welcoming, pleasant, and helpful. Nikos went the extra yard to accommodate us. Our great room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. The lobby had a balcony with a fabulous harbor view. The breakfast was amazing and the use of the internet was convenient. Finding the hotel is a bit confusing at first but takes only a few moments to figure out and has a great location. This hotel has elegance and charm at a great price.

A beautiful boutique hotel with only a few rooms. Our room had plenty of space, was extremely clean and well decorated and had a small balcony to sit and watch the harbour below and the passing parade of people. We also had a welcome basket of wine and chocolates. Antonia on reception was very helpful in making care hire reservations and giving tips and directions about places to visit.
It is a little difficult to find from the car park nearby as you need to walk along a couple of back streets to reach it - we failed this iq test and had to call for directions and Nik the owner came and found us. Nik's father has the restaurant next door for some great traditional cooking and ouzo.
