“Highly Recomended”
Reviewed March 21, 2009

We have visited Crete on a regular basis for some 22 years.Until about seven years ago we had varying experiences of accomodation in Chania. This included a disaster which was recommended by The Rough Guide- no less.We finally found this wonderful oasis of calm just far enough from the main harbour but just a short stroll through wonderfull back streets full of charm and delightful places to eat.
The El Greco, has wonderful friendly staff,a very modern approach to design and amazing views from it's rooftop vista. We cannot recomend this haven of peace highly enough. And by the way it is great value for money.ENJOY.

There is nothing wrong with this hotel. Service as fine. The rooms are average (has a dormitory like feel). If your looking for this type of hotel then this may be fine. Location is good. When we stayed it was very cheap, but for the same price we stayed at the Vildeamine S.A, which was amazing compared to this hotel.

This small hotel is situated near the entrance to the village, and on top of the cliff overlooking the sea. As you enter, you are looking through the breakfast area, to the terrace, beyond which is the view of the sea. Facing as it does south-east, the impression is of flooding light.

Our room was on the 3rd floor, which amplified the up-in-the-sky feeling even further. The decor is simple and modern - lots of pale wood and plain colours. There is a small staff, but the breakfasts were pleasant and sufficient, with usually some freshly cooked home-made dish.

It has a small pool and a grassed area with room for half a dozen loungers. It is only 10 mins to the beach in one direction and the tavernas of the village in the other - that's going. Coming back from either, there is a steep climb, the tariff for the wonderful views.

Chania hotels tend to be over-priced as the city is so very attractive and interesting. However the El Greco is a very sound proposition for a visit. Its location is good, the prices very reasonable and its staff are very friendly and efficient. I would happily stay there again.

We went to the El Greco for a belated honeymoon in mid September 2008 for two weeks. I had contacted them to ask for a room on the second floor with a balcony overlooking the street - what a relief to speak to polite, helpful English speaking staff (my Greek's not up to much!). When we arrived we had exactly the room we had asked for and it was lovely - a bit plain but clean, spacious and there was a lift to it. The free internet access was a real bonus as XL collapsed while we were away and we were able to get our flights home sorted out with very little trouble. We also managed to keep our business at home on track without trips to internet cafes! The breakfast were fine, and although a bit predictable, certainly set you up for the day at a reasonable cost. On the day we had to set out at 5.15 am to visit the Samaria Gorge we were able to have breakfast at 4.45 am with no trouble - great! The hotel is very central but quiet and within easy reach of the beach, shops, restaurants, places of interest and the bus station. I would really recommend the El Greco - it was reasonably priced as well.

  • Liked — Very clean, lots of room, good bathroom, balcony.
  • Disliked — A bit plain - no frills!

The El Greco in Chania is a quaint hotel located on pedestrianized Theotokopoulou street about a block away from the main harbour drag. We had a second floor room with a great little European style balcony overlooking the street (if there is such a thing). It was great crashing here after an evening of wandering the charming backstreets of Chania and especially after sampling it's delicacies (braised snails and raki two nights in a row!). We paid 50 euros per night, however breakfast was not included and cost 6 euros pp.

While the room was nothing special and completely adequate (e.g. good air conditioning, decent beds, spacious for European standards), the only sore spot was the shower, which was what I would describe as an poorly defined 2x2 foot area next to the toilet with a drain. No shower curtain or even a divider on the floor to keep water from innundating the entire washroom after even a short spray. It didn't help that the water pressure and focus on the showerhead was reminiscent of a industrial strength power washer.

Other than that location, comfort and price can't be beat!
