We needed a hotel in Chania for two nights at the end of a fortnight in Crete because we were flying out of Chania airport. We wanted to be in the midst of the Venetian old town, near the harbour and accessible by car just to drop off the luggage. El Greco appeared to fit all these requirements and so we booked on line.
It was easy to find by car and we were able to stop within 20 meters to drop off our suitcases. Free municipal parking was available within easy walking distance and we left the car there.
The hotel was in the ideal location for us; our room was rather basic but we didn't intend to spend much time there. The shower hose leaked like a sieve but the manager changed it for a new one asap. The room looked into the narrow, busy street below and there was a great view from the roof terrace if you want to see the harbour while sipping a cool beer.
Very friendly and helpful staff and an interesting breakfast in the street added to our enjoyment.
Interestingly, we had planned to drop off the hire car in Chania town as we didn't need it for the last two days; in the event, it was cheaper to keep the car and drop it off at the airport on departure thus paying an extra two days hire charge but avoiding a drop off charge for the town, and a taxi fare out to the airport. We hired from Greenways in Remythnon at 20 Euros a day all in.

Room Tip: The rooftop rooms look great but might be very hot in summer. Choose a street side room in any case...

Somehowe I made a mistake filling in our arrival date - the same day I made the reservation, meaning the next day - and even though I immediately got an email back asking what our time of arrival would be, I still not noticed my failure.
When we arrived the next day it took some time to figure things out but eventually everything was sorted out and they forgave me!

So, in two words: very helpful. But one advice: take the top room with sea view. It's great!

Room Tip: Take one of the two sea room views on the top floor.

Though the staff is very friendly and the location very good (old town)I can't say that we would go back or recommend this hotel. We requested double beds but nothing. We requested 2nd floor rooms but nothing again. The balcony of the room faced the wall and that was extremely depressing!Only good thing was the bakery across the street! I think this hotel needs improvement and renovating touch-ups.

Room Tip: ask for a room with a front balcony (there are only 4 or 6 i think)

Great location, clean & comfortable rooms, and a GREAT location make El Greco the place to say in Chania. I'm a Greek-American who's made many trips to Chania and have paid a great deal for a lot less. So glad to have found El Greco. I've even recommended it to a number of friends and family traveling to Chania, and they all also loved it.

If you do decide to stay here PLEASE do not stay in a ground floor room. We had an awful time in this hotel. The room is dark and dingy. The bathroom small. Crap towels. Rubbish pillows. But the worst thing was the noise from reception. The breakfast room was next to our room and we were awoken early both days. One night I had to ask the security guard to stop shouting into his phone as he'd woken us up!! So irritating. We asked to be moved and the receptionist said she'd try and move us the following day but blatantly didn't. The breakfast wasn't that great either. Really good location though.

We stayed for 3 nights at El Greco in September and liked it. You have to accept that what you are getting is a small (approx. 24 rooms) Cretan family run hotel, squeaky clean with friendly & helpful English speaking staff and situated on one of the nicest pedestrianised streets in Old Chania. It is not a bland businessman's hotel with complimentary mini sewing kits etc.We stayed one night in a full sea view room (only available one night) and two nights in a side sea view room. The sea view room (Room 403) opens off a roof terrace with a jaw dropping view over the roof tops of Old Chania, the Venetian harbour, the Med and off to the right the mountains of the Akrotiri peninsular. One word of warning - this is on the forth floor and the elevator goes to the third floor and the stairs are quite steep so don't consider this if you are not fully able bodied. The room - especially the curtainless shower was a bit minimalist but like the other room at El Greco the bed was comfortable, the air con unit was modern, effective and almost silent, and there is a "proper" fridge for you own water, fruit etc. The side sea view room (Room 203) had been refurbished and had double doors opening onto a small wrought iron balcony with a view, at the end of the street, of a bit of sea. Can't speak for the rooms at the back of the hotel - best check you are at the front when you book.

Breakfast food was OK but why, oh why,in a country which dumps oranges in landfill because of over production don't they provide real freshly squeezed OJ?? After the first breakfast we went to the bakery right opposite and sat at a pavement table for a "Breakfast No. 2" which featured a full tumbler of real OJ.

We booked through Booking.com and paid 97.5 euros for Room 403 (you pay for the view) and 49.50 euros per night for Room 203 (behind-the -door price 90 euros).

When checking out, the card terminal was "down" so I had to walk into town and find an ATM to withdraw cash to pay. Just as well I wasn't in a hurry.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the front of the hotel e.g. the one we had, Room 203
