“Quirky, but incredibly friendly”
Reviewed October 10, 2008

I had read the reviews and booked the hotel on the back of them, and I wasn't disappointed. At first, the hotel seems a little quirky - you enter via a narrow "bar"-type entrance and I did wonder if I'd booked the right place.

However, the hotel manager was increadibly friendly. He helped me work out where to park (guests can park in the space owned by a rental agency recommended by the hotel) and carried my heavy bag up the quirky winding stair case.

They have free internet and a good spread for breakfast, despite only having 10 rooms. And they are very very friendly and attentive - I too got my jar of honey on leaving!

The rooms themselves could do with some sprucing up, but it is an old building, and they are clean and well looked after. The only downside is that there is a lot of noise between rooms, esp on the wooden floors. However, I stayed overlooking the square and was not bothered by the noise from the street, as the windows are dowble-glazed.

The hotel is in an excellent location, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

  • Disliked — The noise within the hotel and the bathroom sink that seemed not to empty!

I had the pleasure of staying at the Hotel Vilelmine for 5 nights in September 2008. The hotel and room were both beautiful and immaculately clean and a great value for the price. I had a big, sunny room with 2 double doors opening to the wrought iron balcony. It was furnished with a table and chairs and sun umbrella and overlooked the market street in front of the hotel. The best part of the hotel for me was the friendliness and hospitality shown me by the members of the family who own and run the hotel. In particular, Antonis was interesting and friendly and made a point of talking with guests. As I was traveling solo, it was very nice to have someone to exchange a bit of conversation with in the evenings. Chania is a beautiful little town with lots of picturesque streets, winding alleys, shops, restaurants and a beautiful harbor. I was able to rent a car for a day and explore some of the western end of the island--beautiful views over the ocean on the coastal road (even if it was a narrow, winding road with sheer drop-offs). Elafonisi Beach is particularly beautiful and well worth the 2 hour drive from Chania.

Fantastic hotel!!

Stayed at the Vilelmine Hotel in Chania for one week from 4th September 2008. We booked a double room and asked for a Sea View.

There was very little sea to be viewed from our balcony but plenty more besides. Our room overlooked the main square and Church and was always lively although perfectly quiet in the evenings. The room itself was charming in style and clean as a new pin every day when we returned courtesy of our fabulous maid.

Breakfast at the Vilelmine is plentiful ( Contimental) and my wife loved the Yoghurt and honey special. The hotel is nice and cool, air conditioned etc and has a very pleasant atmosphere. Antonis and his family are a great team who go out of their way to make sure everything is just right.

Antonis even hooked me up with Sky Sports one evening and stayed up and bought me a beer !!! because there are no English channels in the room and I wanted to watch Andy Murray in the US Open final (bad decision)

Exceptional service throughout and I would highly recommend you stay here if you are looking for a boutique hotel in central Chania, a great city with a beach.

We spent two nights here and loved the experience!

I had initially reserved a double room on the 2nd floor, but upon check-in, Antonis explained that he had made a mistake, so we were upgraded to the penthouse suite. What an amazing suite! The details were spectacular, and we appreciated the modern amenities. The bathroom was the biggest we've seen in Europe! In fact, the master bedroom was enormous too.

Our private balcony looked over a square with the cathedral, and we loved the umbrella and chairs provided on the balcony. It was a great spot to hang out for a siesta. We could even see the ocean from the balcony.

The hospitality of Antonis and his family was wonderful. Unfortunately b/c of our plans, we didn't get to experience the included breakfast. We left very early in the morning, and Antonis ordered us a cab the night before. The cab was very prompt and picked us up right at the door the next morning.

The location of the hotel can't be beat! It's on a little street in the Old Town, so accessing restaurants, cafes, and stores is fantastic.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wish we could have stayed longer. Chania is a superb town to visit, and this hotel only enhanced our stay.

We hope to return one day!

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights. Antonis and the staff were delightful and very helpful. The hotel is off of a very cute little street and within walking distance to the harbor. Our room was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. I think it was a great value. If we are lucky enough to go back someday, we'd definitely stay here again.

We had a great stay in Chania during the shoulder season early May 2008. Our room was large, clean with a wonderful view of the square off our balcony. We felt very comfortable staying there and anytime we had a question or request, Antonis and his staff were very helpful, from borrowing wine glasses for our room to asking if we could get our breakfast a little earlier than posted, because we needed to catch a bus to hike the Samaria Gorge. Being "foodies", Antonis pointed us in the direction of some excellent restaurants -- and not just his opinion -- you would know because it's where the locals were eating!

On one of our vacation days, we wanted to visit Knossos, so he arranged to get us a car through an independent local rental agency. The owner of the agency used to live in NY and spoke excellent English. We got a nice car at a good one-day rate and some very helpful information on driving the roads in Crete. When we returned the car, he gave us a tasty bottle of wine from Crete after we mentioned the wine we got the day before turned out to be undrinkable.

We looked forward to the breakfasts at Vilelmine. The Greek yogurt was one of the highlights as was the freshly squeezed orange juice. Plenty of variety for the four days we were there.

Only concern we had was after we left the hotel, we needed to get to the airport and were told if we walked to the taxi stand a couple of blocks away, the rates would be better since drivers add a couple extra euros if they drop off or pick up at the hotel because of the location. We walked to the stand and the driver we had not only charged us *more* than our taxi from the airport to the hotel, but refused to turn the meter on. Antonis might ask the folks who run the taxi stand if there is a flat-rate to the airport so he can inform other guests who may want to do the same thing we did. (We only had two pieces of carry-on luggage in the trunk of the cab, so it can't be a weight issue).

All in all, we loved Crete and had a wonderful time in Chania.

Dear Reviewer and Readers,
In respose to a review concerning the sometines spurious practices of the local taxis in Chania, I should state the following: the fact is that the taxi drivers by law have to turn the meter on so if you insist and they refuse to do this, you should tell them that you intend to take their taxi license number and inform the police because they are affecting our tourist industry in a negative way. In any case, even if the taxi drivers do not put the meter on and you are not up for an ensuing argument, you should agree on the fare price of 18-20 euros to/from the airport and no more than that before the taxi departs.

We absolutely loved this hotel. It is run by a friendly Greek family who were so nice (they gave us a jar of honey when we left!) and helpful with suggestions about restaurants and things to do. The location was amazing -- right in the middle of Chania, overlooking a large public square and with balconies on the square. It was so convenient to everything. Our room was large and had high ceilings and was very clean. Best of all, the rate was 60 euros per night. We checked out 2 other little hotels in the area before choosing it, and Hotel Vilelmine had the best rate AND best room. We stayed here after escaping from the horrible Hotel Halepa, and it's the best thing we did all trip!!!

  • Liked — So friendly, great location, great room!
  • Disliked — Very steep stairs may be difficult for elderly or disabled people (though fine otherwise)
