It seems almost embarrassing to be belatedly reviewing Rudi,s bar now since I and my wife and latterly our child have been drinking there now for fifteen years, and think of Rudi, Elpithe and more recently Argyro as some of our closest friends. Where to start? Firstly the bar. In an old building but with gorgeous and tasteful decoration, beautiful wood and sanded mellow old stone, the setting is perfect. Next the music: Rudi,s eclectic taste covers all the bases, from jazz to funk, soul and back again but one phrase can sum it all up - IMMACULATELY COOL! but not too loud.
To the main event: The Beer!
A wonderful range of beers from around the world, specialising in Belgians (but not exclusively so) means you will never run out of a new discovery or a new flavour. All being served in their own unique glasses makes this a sophisticated and elegant experience especially given that the beers are served by the lovely Elpithe and Argyro.
Rudi meanwhile is labouring away behind the bar preparing the best beer food you will ever have. Gorgeous cheeses and wonderful sausage from all over Europe are expertly prepared and served with salad and superb bread. You must try the dense sausage from Germany - I think called the Jaeger.
Finally the people. Rudi and Elpithe and Argyro have the unremitting knack of putting you at your ease. They will chat if you wish or leave you alone with your friends. Never obtrusive, always attentive.
The whole place is exceptional, do not miss it. If in Chania I would not drink anywhere else. If staying nearby you need to come in for the evening and experience Rudi's particular charm, warmth and philosophy.
Enjoy it - and I'll see you there.
