To find this place, follow the El Venizelou street from the center, past the arena and you will find it in a corner, a block after a very traditional cafeneion. This is far from a tourist restaurant, for three reasons:
1. It is located in a busy road, way off the tourist trade, about 20 minutes walk from the old town
2. It is not open in July/August. It's a place for office lunches, many people buy their food and take it back to their office.
3. All signs outside are in Greek.
The concept is simple: every dish is on display, you point on what you want and pay 6 Euro for each plate. A lunch for two with salad and beer ends up at 21 Euro. If you want to save money, share a dish and a salad and drink water. You will not leave hungry. You will get a dessert and a glass of raki on the house, for the road.
The food is straightforward stuff: a couple of meat and fish dishes, a casserole, some sort of gratin (like mousaka or lasagna) and some vegetable dishes. Choose and have a seat, you will get your food minutes later.
It's very good food. And the service is excellent, friendly and welcoming. But best of all is the interior. High sealing, dark wooden panels... It looks like an old luxury restaurant from circa 1920 and it probably is. We try to come her as often as we can and the only times we are disappointed is when we find it closed.
