I delightful surprise, lovely collection of artifacts that a small amount of knowledge can compensate for any lackings in labelling. Very cheap and nice introduction for little ones before hitting larger museums

The museum is an excellent place to visit. It has large exhibits in a beautiful building that also boasts a gorgeous garden. Tickets were three euro when I visited (May 2014) and staff are friendly and speak excellent english. However, visitors should know that the museum is small - a visit probably wouldn't take longer than 30 - 40 minutes.

This place has some excellent exhibits but they're really not making nearly enough of them and it's seems to be very poorly run. For a start, it's opening hours are too short and too infrequent. Secondly, half the exhibits have no descriptions and for those that do, the text is badly translated and confusing; they should be helping visitors to understand how all of he different pieces from different eras represent some historical evolution, practices etc. Lastly, they have signs everywhere saying that photography is strictly forbidden; is is very disrespectful to their visitors who have travelled so far, have made a point of coming and would like only to record their memories - I understand why tripods or flash might be banned but there is no conservation reasons at all got banning photography entirely. It's just not good enough.

My visit to the museum was just awe inspiring, it's not until you really look and read about the exhibits there that you get a real idea for just how old Greek civilisation and the surrounding area of Crete really is, at first a museum doesn't seem fun and if you're with kids I wouldn't bother, but if you someone who likes to actually see some super old exhibits from ancient ancient times then this is the place to go. Don't be tempted to just walk around though, stop and look and read the cards because it's certainly worth it.

The Archeological Museum has a nice collection of artifacts ranging from the Minoan period around 2700 BC to the Hellenistic Period around 300 BC and Roman era around 100 BC. While better quality items may be found in the more famous museums around the world, this collection offers a multitude of artifacts that indicate how the average Minoan, Greek or Roman citizen might have lived. Some items were recovered from burial grounds of the wealthy, but most were from less illustrious backgrounds. Nevertheless those pieces are often the most interesting and for the price of admission being only €3, you cannot go wrong.
