the building is one of the last remaining covered markets, dating to the end of 19thc, not demolished fortunately, date 1911 still at entrance, full of various local products, excellent cheese, bakeries
Unfortunately the food market has been turned into a tourist market recently, a big loss compared to three decades ago, the original character is hardly there any more, but still very interesting and picturesque.

The "excellent" rating is for one little restaurant in the market. If you enter from the East side of the market it is the second (?) restaurant on the right - the smallest in the market. Not much to look at but mother, of the mother and son team, cooks the best food I have eaten in Chania. Counter in front, grill behind it to the right, perhaps 6-8 tables, tiny kitchen area at the back. Meat stews, oven cooked sole on lemony potatoes, grilled lamb chops, moussaka, salads, etc, etc. Always good. Greek home cooking at its best. And if you have overdone the local raki you can always come back at dawn for Mother's tripe soup - the local hangover cure. Hmm.

The rest of the market is a mixed bag of butchers, fishmongers (watch the smaller one who sold me old whitebait under the fresh ones), a decent grocer and baker, plenty of cheese and olive shops and the ubiquitous tourist junk too. There are other restaurants too: the one that sells fried and grilled seafood is also very good and the rest look fine.

The Agora in ancient Greece is a place where people met and mingled and the most famous ones are the ones that served as market.
The Market agora in Chania is the perfect example of this cohesion, you can find all kind of local souvenirs and the meet, fish and cheese market.
Very nice and welcoming the people working there and fair price.

We ate here on several occasions and had some good quick food. A good way to try some new food - not too expensive although it could be if you aren't careful as prices not always displayed

Nice and friendly people, competent professionals, shops and small restaurants offering authentic Cretan cuisine. Visitors may find real stuff from Crete. Just avoid the plastic souvenirs... A must-do experience
