We tried this place because we saw locals meeting there for a celebration. It ended up being one of our best eating experiences in three years living in Greece. Full of local Cretan foods any adventurous foodie would love to experiment with. Don't be afraid to ask for suggestions, but in particular try the skefta. Also the best bathroom doors ever.

While walking down small streets of Chania, we have been attracted by the music coming from this restaurant. We have been welcomed in a warmful and careful way and placed in a table on the terasse near the musicians.

The menu changes a bit from others tavernas we have seen while observing traditionnal food. (which is a good mixing to us!)
We had a special lamb cooked with vegetables in a piece of paper (dish of the day) and a marinated rabbit with lemon and thym. The dishes were very tender and tasteful. We also had a Cretan cheese that had been matured in olive oil : all excellent !

The place and the music were pleasant and we had the feeling to be in totally disconnected place. Other tables were local people and were singing with the songs :)

In a nut's shell: excellent food, careful service, charming atmosphere ! (and good value for money :)

After walking around the back streets of the old town in Chania, we were attracted by the greek music coming from this taverna and we gave it a try.
The atmosphere is relaxed and romantic, and the live music was great.
The food (we had a shrimp stew and a souvlaki) was good, but our taste buds were enhanced by the nice music :)
The restaurant is in the shell of a house (part of the roof is missing) and has some trees providing shade and roof.

Chania (also Canea, the ancient Kydonia) is one of the most popular holiday places in Crete. The picturesque harbour front and a lot of excellent beaches in the outskirts of the town attract tourists from all over. Unfortunately, this is also a place where you can get extremely bad (and often expensive) food. It is nice to know that there are a few place away from where most tourists gather, like To adespoto in Sifaka Street that serve very good food indeed. A few years ago, there was another restaurant on the same premises, Anaplous. This is unfortunately gone, but you still sit outside under vines, and although the cooking is different, it is still excellent. Here you get an excellent Cretan salad (the common Greek salad with dakos added - rusk covered with yoghurt and cooked tomatoes), a decent tzatziki, excellently spiced Cretan country sausages, mushrooms baked with honey and cream cheease (mizithra) - so good that we ordered a second helping!, some of the best stuffed wine leaves I have had, and more. Very decent open white wine. We had almost tried the fish we saw later at the next table (baked in paper), but felt that the waiter advertised it too much for our taste (but we should have tried it, it looked great).
We will certainly come back here.
