“Delightful!”
Reviewed June 7, 2010

After several days of zigzagging up and down Crete, I capped off my vacation in Crete’s most picturesque big city – Chania.

There nestled in a quiet alley in the Turkish quarter I found Lena’s Pension. It’s in a prime location; near the most authentic restaurants and souvenir shops, five minutes from Chania’s only free parking lot, and a ten minute walk to the beach.

Lena herself is a delight - friendly, helpful, sociable. The pension is cozy. Decorated with antiques and bric-a-brac from around town, it feels more like a B&B. Need a place to secure valuables? There’s a safe in your room. Need clean clothes? Lena offers laundry service for a nominal fee. Hungry for a snack or light breakfast? Grab an orange from the bowl at the reception desk and Lena graciously serves coffee or tea at no extra charge.

When I arrived in Chania I was exhausted, but I left well rested and full of cheer. Lena’s Pension is a great value; a hidden gem in Chania.

I recently stayed at Lena's with two friends, and we really enjoyed the experience. The room was clean, bright, and airy, and DID come with both heat and A/C option (unlike other review mentioned), though we needed neither - the windows provided a good breeze to keep us comfortable. The pension also included a rooftop terrace with partial ocean view, which was a great place to relax in the morning for breakfast or in the evening after a day of sightseeing. Some mornings there was a fair amount of street noise starting around 8 or 9 idue to construction across the lane, but I imagine this was unique to our visit.

The room was lovely, but the pension is fairly self-service. It's a different experience than staying at a full-service resort (we supplied our own shampoo) . We got clean towels every day, coffee or tea for the morning, and had a refrigerator, dishes, hotplate in the room with access to a shared kitchen, which was everything we really needed.

Lena was very helpful with restaurant recommendations and ideas for things to do. She helped arrange a car for us which was dropped off directly at the pension, and had so many good ideas of things to do in the area that we wound up extending our stay by two days. We loved Chania and the Old Town, and the location of the pension was perfect for eating, drinking, and getting out to see the city and surrounding area. I'm already planning my return!

We stayed here following reading reviews elsewhere on this place. The buildings are very close to the port, a short walk. The rooms are very charming - basic, but airy and bright - no air conditioning, but fair enough for the price which at 90 euro for 6 of us was ridiculously good for the area. We didnt need the air conditioning anyway. There is a kitchen area you can use (communal) but this place is self catering. Lena is great at staying in contact, she was more than helpful and very polite. It really was like staying at someone's home, which to us, added to the experience of visiting such a charming town. Would definitely stay there again. A great budget option
