We were leaving for the airport so this was our last meal in Crete. No complaints the potions were slightly larger then expected, I asked for roast potatoes and they were cooked nicely with herbs and butter. The mixed fried vegetables were nice. Their special vegetation dish from Chania received no complaints. So all in all a good meal. The gift shop is a plus.

We were approached one night very persistently by someone for this restaurant on the street, and though we entertained her and listened to her spiel about Kleftiko and how they cook in ceramic pots. While we were intrigued, we didn't like how talkative she was, when we were simply just browsing the menu, so we didn't eat there that night. However, a few days later we decided to go back and eat there for dinner, as it did sound intriguing. It was a lovely setting tucked into an alley by the synagogue with lovely decor (a bit Turkish style), including some elegantly decorated doors over 120 years old. The food is what we truly enjoyed and the service was very good. I have Celiac disease and they were aware of this and we able to tell me what was safe on the menu (most of it was gluten free naturally).
My recommendation, bypass the talkative hostess and just go sit down and have a quiet delicious meal!

Hello, Thanks for the very good review. Our restaurant is hard to find and so we have a young lady on the street -" a greeter-"who introduces our restaurant to people( our restaurant is hidden from view, tucked away in a small open courtyard street). She is new on the job as we are training her, and thus very enthusiastic!! She knows the food is very good indeed..... I will take your comments as constructive criticism .

Our first night in Chania and were a bit overwhelmed by the wide choice of restaurants. We made a good choice and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. We were attracted by the traditional method of cooking in clay pots. The lamb in yogurt was our favourite.

Thank you very much for the review. The lamb with yoghurt is an authentic Turkish/Cretan recipe.

We enjoyed To Xani very much. The owner had made a wonderful mushroom soup...superb. We also ate a Greek salad and some lamb and cheese in parchment paper. We met a lovely English couple who live part of the year in Hania and frequent this restaurant whenever they are in town, saying that they have had time to experience first hand which restaurants they consider one of the best. I would agree with them on To Xani. Very flavorful, and also off the beaten track. I love the pottery we ate from and the Moroccan hanging lamps and doors!

For many years now my wife and I go for a week in the spring to Chania just to relax and have a good time. Part from a few exceptions we eat all our meals at To Xani, simply beacause of the great food, good and friendly service and nice converations with Dimitri and Marge. We have tried some other high rated restaurants but they simple couldn`t be compared with To Xani.
Next week we will visit again and are looking really foreward to it.
