Aptera is free to go into and has lots of ruins to walk around. This was a great place to visit and had a mix of Roman and Greek ruins plus down the road is a fort (which was closed when we went) however is an impressive place to go and look at.
Aptera is on top of a hill which is a little drive from Chania (about 15/20 minutes roughly) and be mindful on the roads up the hill as this for us (not used to left-hand drive cars) was a little difficult to judge when near the edge of the hill on the road.
Well worth a visit in my opinion.
