“Wonderful setting and food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2014 via mobile

Lovely setting and superb food. Very busy in August but we were not rushed at all and the cooking was truly superb. Worth seeking out and booking in advance (around ten couples were turned away as we were dining)...

“Oustanding moussaka!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2014

Positives: Food is great, very very nice Moussaka.

Negatives: Restaurant is hard to find and so busy that the staff have trouble coping. Staff and owner not too friendly, maybe they were stressed.

“first night delight”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2014

first night we arrived in chania and it was time for dinner. Hotel Casa Delfino recommended this restaurant and called ahead for reservations. The owner is an english woman and her two greek sons and they were so hospitable. The food is amazing...my husband is still talking about his stuffed pork dish. The surrounding are very quiet and pleasant. Definitely a must go!

“The first and best meal of a two week Cretan holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 9, 2014

Having read excellent things about Portes in the Lonely Planet guide to Crete, and wanting to steer well clear of the tourist trap restaurants lining the harbour, we made this our first meal of the holiday.

We knew we were taking a bit of a chance by not booking and sure enough, even on a Tuesday night, all seats were taken when we arrived at prime dining time of 9pm. The owner Susannah (forgive me if I have that wrong) seemed the type of host however to never turn a diner away and, after seemingly mistaking me as Irish, she promised us a table for two if we were able to come back only 30 mins later.

At 9.30pm we arrived back to find many of the same diners who had looked like they were finishing off mains 30 minutes earlier, still going hard at it. My stomach rumbling in anticipation, I took the lengthy, drawn out meals to be a good sign.

Seated and orders taken (mixed fritters, greek salad, olives, breads, souvlaki...all the usual suspects really) we sat back and loosened our belts. I'm no food critic, but I can tell you when a meal is good. And Portes is GOOD. Over the top portion sizes perhaps, but they seem to expect that most customers take a doggy bag home.

We took our time over our meal. the restaurant is located in a rather charming side street and theirs lots of hustle and bustle to gaze over in between bites. The staff are all efficient, friendly and worthy of a good tip.

The complimentary raki to finish off the meal only added to authentic Greek hospitality at this superb restaurant.
