In our week's stay in Chania, (our first visit to Crete), we fell in love with the funky, winding little alleyways of the old town and chose to eat a different one of their charming restaurants every night. But Portes, was by far and away, our favourite place to dine. Wonderfully extensive and diverse selection on the menu, friendliest of staff, plus the charm of sitting at a small table outdoors in a small lane, listening to talented Greek musicians while wearing shorts and T-shirt every night, (knowing it would be cold and drizzling rain every night and day back home in England),... just made this restaurant like a dream of heaven for us. Go there. You won't regret this piece of well-intentioned advice.

Excellent service and food, not sure why some had to wait so long for food as mentioned elsewhere. Liked the friendly atmosphere and the quaintness and the price of course which was very good for what we ate and drank.

If you like Octopus and squid you will love the cuttlefish. It was so tender with a mild lemon dressing, fantastic! We sat outside and my wife was chilly so they brought her a shawl, how special is that. We love Chania because of places and people like the ones at Portes.

In a small area, with hundreds of restaurants vying for your attention, this one set itself apart. Not only was the service and food very nice, but we appreciated the relatively calm location. We actually ate there twice, we enjoyed it so much.
Thanks, Aris at Casa Delfino hotel, for the recommendation.

Worth a visit since the atmosphere in the small street adds to the experience. We had sea bream cooked in paper, superb, really moist and tasty. Service was about the same speed as at many Crete restaurants, but everything was cooked fresh. We prefer to wait for such quality. Only negative it does get a bit warm at lunchtime.
