We got to Agios NIkolaos on the 3rd of June and planned to stay a couple of nights as we explored the surrounding area of Eastern Crete. From a coffee shop overlooking the lake, we looked on the internet for cheapish rooms. We stumbled upon Hotel Angelos and gave them a ring. We were keen for a twin roon with a view and she said there were plenty available.

We drove down and stopped at various other budget hotels but were not impressed. Finally we got to Angelos. The instructions said to look for the lady in the mini market downstairs. We found our way to the dark shop and saw an elderly lady, all dressed in black (very typical attire of the locals in mourning, which can last for years and years in some cases). She was the LOVELIEST! She took us to our room, which literally overlooked the Cretan Ocean. The room was small and the bathroom was shockingly tiny, with no curtain for the even tinier shower. The room was cheap and enchanted by the view of the shimmering ocean, we took it and stayed for two nights.

The beds were small but the mattresses were actually quite comfy. The air con worked well, there was a mini-fridge and if we wanted to we could have had a kettle at our disposal. The hotel was right on the main road that took you to the centre of the village, so we expected it to be quite noisy at night. And it was a bit, especially when the party boat returned to the marina at 11:30pm one night, blasting out horrific pop.

The biggest downside was the toilet room. Within a minute of starting a shower, the entire place turned soaking wet (bog and all), so if you were the second person to go in the experience was mostly unpleasant.

Otherwise, the place was decent. We were on the second floor and you could either take the external stairs outside the mini market, or you could use the lift that would take you down to another part of her shop that sold mainly luggages- so you had to walk out of the shop to get anywhere!
The lady who owned it was marvellous and really keen to help, she was a real character.

If you are not too fussy, would definitely recommend

The hotel is a 5 minute walk away from the centre of town. The rooms are basic but have everything you need- air con, balcony, fridge freezer, dressing table with mirror and we had a very spacious room which was great for our 8 night stay. The view however is 5 star! I would highly recommend this place if you use your hotel as somewhere to sleep, wash and sit on the balcony for a couple of hours. The supermarket downstairs, which is run be the same family, is handy for any drinks and snacks you may need. Although there is a reception area in the hotel we checked in and checked out with the woman in the supermarket.

The hotel is accessed from the grocery store downstairs via an elevator, which we were not aware of when we arrived.
The staff were friendly and accommodating. The room was pleasant with a nice view overlooking the harbor. To my surprise, there was no shower curtain.
The location is near the downtown so that was a huge plus!
