“A gem!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 17, 2007

After reading the above average reviews about Akrotiri (and especially George the proprietor!) before travelling I was really hoping it would live up to them, and it certainly did not disappoint! Having recently returned both myself and my boyfriend wish we could get the next plane back as it is truly a gem and in our opinion one of the best spots in Agios Nikolaos.

The rooms are basic but clean (our room was tidied and we were given fresh towels every day) and they each have stunning views over the bay and on to the town itself. Yes the bathrooms are small but as modern as you need and most important of all have a powerful shower which never runs out of hot water!

If you think the views from the rooms are good then the wait until you see the views from the bar and pool area – amazing! To wake up every morning and have breakfast in that setting sets up your day perfectly. Breakfasts are simple but totally up to scratch with fresh bread, cheese, ham and freshly cooked eggs however you like them to order.

The nearest beach is Almiros (which you can reach by a bit of a rugged hill walk from the hotel in less than 5mins) which is by far the best beach in the area. It is sandy, you can rent loungers/umbrellas and there is a beach café as well as a water sports area. Also at the river end is a fab Pool Bar which serves great lunch food and Mythos beer in frozen glasses. We found the staff here friendly and they pay excellent chilled music.

For us the location of the hotel was perfect as all we wanted to do was relax but I think those wanting a bit of a crazy one might not be so happy. As other people have stated it is at least a 30/40min walk into town which we didn’t find a problem but I can imagine it could be for some. The walk after dark is a bit treacherous so definitely pack a torch if you don’t want to get taxi’s/drive everywhere.

The town itself is pretty mixed. The lake is fine for a drink (we liked Café Du Lac best) but I wouldn’t recommend eating by the water itself, the waiters have fantastic persuasion skills and don’t leave you alone until you take a table - annoying! We preferred the restaurants and bars nestled away from the lake and around both harbour areas. They are generally cheaper, serve better food and depending on where you go can be very traditional or totally cosmopolitan.

I think that’s most of it covered but I can’t go without mentioning the man himself – George! He was always there to help whether it be opening the bar up to cook us pizza on our arrival, cooking us and the rest of the hotel the most mouth-watering lamb meal for the best night of the holiday or letting us have our room until 7pm on check-out day so we could have a shower before we left at no extra charge! He was a true star and along with his lovely staff I’m sure are what make the Akrotiri so special! Stay there!

We just returned from our stay at the Akrotiri Hotel in Agios Nikolaos, Crete. We had a wonderful time vacationing with our two young adult children. George, our host, was amazingly charming and gracious. We arrived at about 1 AM and he came out to greet us and opened up the poolfront bar to serve us drinks! His hospitality continued right to the end of the trip where he got up at 6:30 AM our last morning to serve us breakfast himself. The pool is a good size and includes a diving board. There is a small secluded and private beach that is part of the property that my husband and I enjoyed. The kids could easily walk to the nearby public beach where they found the action they were looking for. They could also walk into town along a coastal pathway and they did this several times. The accommodations are simple and clean but very comfortable. We had a small patio, a bedroom with a double bed along with a common living area where the kids slept in twin beds. There is a refrigerator , sink and small stove unit. The bathroom is small but adequate. Beds are comfortable. The only real drawback is that there is just one air conditioning unit and it sits in the bedroom. So when we closed off the door for privacy the other room did not have air. There is a window, but no screens. Since this was mid-July it was quite warm. This seems to be the way things work in Greece; only the main bedroom gets the air conditioning unit. We had a similar experience in Santorini.
Breakfast was substantial and the bar is always open as is the pool. We really enjoyed this part of Crete. We were away from the crowds but could easily visit the nearby town which had plenty of good restaurants and the usual tourist shops.
If you are looking for a very comfortable place to stay with great hospitality by the owner, this is the place to book. We made our arrangements though Cretetravel.com.

We stayed at the Akrotiri Beach Hotel in Paleokastritsa for the first two weeks in June 2005. It is an old hotel but consequently it is in the prime position right above a lovely beach with crystal clear water. We loved the beautiful, peaceful location and the tranquillity of this wonderful place, which in our opinion is every bit as good as the impression you get from the holiday brochures. It is kept spotlessly clean by a team of friendly hardworking maids. In fact all of the staff at the hotel are so friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for Aris, the Manager, and Ėlena on Reception and the standard of service and attention to the needs of the guests is every bit as good as at far bigger and more expensive hotels we have stayed in abroad over the years. The waitresses, Katrina, Fanny and Nancy made sure you had a very pleasant start to the day at breakfast. The food at breakfast was simple but very good.

Spiros, the Maitre De made you very welcome at dinner but we stayed on a bed and breakfast basis as we love to eat out in the evening at local tavernas. Most tavernas were good but having tried the Belvedere where the food was superb and Aris and his family made you feel so welcome, we chose to eat there every night and some lunchtimes too, although the beach tavernas near the hotel are very good.

The hotel rooms are comfortable if, like us, you like a hard bed. They are all en-suite, simple, clean, air conditioned with a fridge for your use and views that are simply wonderful. There was good entertainment several times a week and wine and bar prices were very reasonable. Overall our 2 week holiday at the Akrotiri Beach Hotel was very good value and we certainly hope to holiday there again.

Minus points: In order to gain access to the beach visitors must be able to cope with numerous steep steps and, although not a problem for us, in our opinion the hotel is certainly not suitable for children as being on a cliff it is unsafe as children cannot be watched all of the time.

We booked Hotel Akrotiri off the Crete travel web site and are pleased to say it fullfilled our expectations. We went before the busy tourist season so we were lucky in that the hotel was not too full. The pool was a great size and clean, the rooms are basic but had good air conditioning and clean towels. There is a bar area with drinks and snack food available to order eg omlette, salad and pizza. Although it's out of town it only takes 20minutes to walk along the sea front. But by far the biggest selling point is the owner George who treats you like an old friend, if you are lucky he will cook for you.

We stayed here in October 2005. Wonderful hosts. Excellant views. Good location for a get away from it all holiday, you can walk along the beach/coast line to Aghios Nicolaos in 20 minutes or a taxi costs 6 - 8 euros. Bedroom was large and bathroom very small. We also had a small kitchen area with fridge, sink, two cooking rings and a fold down table and chairs. A large settee and dressing table. Breakfast consisted of fresh fruit, cheese, ham, an egg fried or boiled and fresh bread and preserves all freshly served by the family. Nothing was a trouble to George the owner. No restaurant but snacks are available all day. Altogether good value and above average for Greek accomodation.

We (couple, 31 years old) stayed at this hotel in May 2005 for 5 nights. It is relatively small and a typical family-run business. The location is nice, near Agios Nikolaos, not directly in the town itself, but on the coast, in a place called Almiros. The view you have from the rooms with balcony towards the sea side is breathtaking without exaggeration. So is the location of the swimming pool (with view over the bay). In the morning, you take your breakfast directly at the pool. The mother of the owner prepares everything herself and compared to the kind of breakfast you get in cafés etc. in Greece normally, this one was very good. The owner, George, is a really nice person. The points which we did not like at this hotel was that they cleanliness was okay, but not exceptional, and the rooms were not very modern, esp. not the bathrooms. Also, the reception was almost never open, i.e. the desk was empty - but usually, you can find someone from the family somewhere in the garden. Generally speaking, we thought that considering the price we paid (70 Euros per night for a double room), the hotel was okay.
