We stayed at the hotel in June 2014 on honeymoon. Barring a rather prolonged & unsavoury episode, we would have described the honeymoon as idyllic & perfect. We would have rated the stay as a '5' but for the problems we had during our stay. I will cover all the relevant points as objectively as possible to provide a complete view of the experience.
Room – Our room (616) was sizeable with a living area, two bathrooms & a bedroom. The bedroom had a TV, although the range of channels was fairly poor. That said, we weren’t on holiday to watch TV, so this was a minor point. The room was air conditioned, had a fridge, a dressing table with mirror & a large amount of storage space. The bedroom led out onto a terrace area & private pool, which overlooked the beautiful swimming pool area & Aeolos restaurant. From looking at other rooms, I believe that we had one of the biggest private pools. Some were quite small & were adjacent to main paths, so bear this in mind that what you expect to have booked, may not be what you get. We were lucky to have such a lovely room & pool. Whilst the pools are considered private, they are only separated by a 3’ frosted glass divider. This will become relevant further into the review. The maid made the bed every day, towels were replaced as required & the floors were cleaned a number of times.
Food – We ate in the main restaurant everyday. The range of food on offer for each meal was excellent. As with any other hotel, the breakfast menu was fairly constant. There was a range of breads, cereals, fruit, cold meats, cheeses & cooked produce, such as bacon, sausage, egg etc. At lunch & evening meal, again there was a range of breads, salads & cooked produce. I don’t believe that one could expect to find a better range of foods in an all inclusive restaurant. At each meal, the staff were courteous & attentive. We were seated immediately, drinks brought & plates that we had finished with were cleared, almost as soon as we had set down our cutlery. This was a theme throughout our stay. Both the restaurant & bar staff’s efficiency and courtesy were a credit to the hotel.
Facilities – We did not make use of the spa & spent little time at the main swimming pools, although the pools as with the entire complex were very clean & tidy. There did not appear to be any difficulties getting a sun lounger & the pool areas were peaceful without children making a noise. The pool table was broken throughout our stay, which was unfortunate, as we had been looking forward to playing in the evenings. A check of the local area failed to find an alternative bar with a pool table. As has been pointed out in previous reviews, this is probably not a hotel for the elderly or disabled. The hotel is on many levels & although there are lifts present, less abled persons may find it difficult moving about the area. The on site shop was very useful for basic provisions.
Local Area - Close to the entrance to the hotel is a pebble beach from which you can swim in the sea. We opted for a bit more privacy and swam from rocks below the coastal path running in front of the hotel. There is a shop a short distance from the entrance. The main town is approximately 10 mins walk along a rather dusty road in a run down looking area. We hired a scooter, which we found invaluable in moving about the area.
The Incident – Unfortunately our stay was soured considerably by the actions of the occupants in the adjacent room, number 617. They moved in after we had arrived & our problems started around 5 days into our stay. Whilst the terrace & pools are private, one can easily see the neighbours over the 3' high frosted glass dividers & the water runs between four pools.
Whilst sitting on our terrace, the couple in 617 decided to copulate, naked in the adjoining pool & terrace in clear view of ourselves. This activity was also visible to those walking past the room on an adjoining roadway & from the pool area in front, where children were playing. We thought that this may have been due to their initial excitement at arriving & possibly not being aware of the surroundings. We are not prudish but do have standards & expect that others should conduct themselves in an appropriate manner, particularly in public view. After this activity occurred again, we complained to hotel staff, who told us that they would speak with the occupants. We received assurances that this would not happen again and if it did the couple would be removed. Unfortunately, the couple could not contain their lust & were again seen copulating in plain view. I again complained & was told that staff would speak more sternly with the couple. We also asked for the pool to be cleaned, as the thought of swimming amongst someone else's ejaculate is quite frankly sickening. This experience made us feel uneasy about going out onto our terrace, as we could not be certain of what sight may greet us. The couple on the other side (I believe it was room 615), were also horrified by what they saw but declined to complain as they were leaving.
The following day, after we were witness to the same acts, I spoke to staff & made it clear that this was not acceptable, requesting that the couple should be removed immediately, as we had been told. Instead of taking robust action with the couple, the staff offered us another room of the same type to afford us some privacy, away from the flagrant exhibitionism next door. This was despite the fact that we had conducted ourselves impeccably & the neighbouring couple appeared to lack any moral standards.
We agreed to look at the room & whilst the room and pool appeared smaller and more shaded, we reluctantly agreed so as not to ruin our honeymoon further. We packed our cases & started to walk towards the new room (624). To get there, we had to walk beside the neighbour's pool. As we walked past the pool, the male of the couple, called out to us "bye bye" in a rather sarcastic tone. I challenged him on his comment & as a point of principle, my wife I returned to the original room, refusing to be mocked for having standards.
We went to the reception & asked to speak to the manager. The manager was sympathetic & stated that he would speak to the couple again and that if they declined to move rooms, they would be moved to another hotel. He informed us that he would phone by 7pm with the outcome. This did not happen. When we went to reception, we were told by a member of staff that the couple had been spoken to & if it happened again, they would be removed. By this point, I was severely frustrated by the inaction of the staff when dealing with the couple. My wife asked that the manager call at our room to have the matter resolved & had taken up days of our honeymoon where we were unable to use our pool or enjoy the terrace for fear of what we might see. After a period of time, my wife phoned reception asking when the manager would be calling, as it was ruining our holiday. The member of staff informed my wife that the manager was not there and to progress the matter, we would have to speak to our agent. I emailed Inspired Luxury Escapes, who we had booked through & dealt with Erin, who could not have been more helpful. The couple were finally moved, as a result of our complaint to the agent. Had we been aware that this was the way to resolve a problem, we would have taken this step earlier, rather than lose three days of our holiday. We spent a considerable amount of time away from the hotel & our room during this time, rather than put ourselves through further distress.
Overall, we enjoyed the hotel & the facilities but felt that the management were very slow in dealing with our problem. Had we not gone to the agent, I do not believe that it would have been dealt with satisfactorily at all. This should have been a very easy matter to deal with & gives little confidence that a bigger problem could have been dealt with by the management.
